That’s particularly odd because apparently the bat had been caught and had specifically tested positive for rabies. So it can’t have been a matter of his thinking that the bat probably wasn’t rabid.

I dunno - rabies is a hell of a way to go. If he had been bitten at the neck, it’s possible a rabies shot may have been ineffective. IIRC, the infection travels up the nervous system to the brain. Maybe a doctor (or someone whose sum total knowledge of rabies infection doesn’t come from a half recalled Discover Magazine article) can set me straight.
