In the classic Larousse Gastronomique, Prosper Montaigné, 1938, first translated into English in 1961, in the introduction to the “Egg” entry, I found this:
A diet too rich in insects, or one composed of substances causing constipation (thereby favoring the laying of eggs) such as powdered meat, fish, blood, etc., gives a bad taste to the eggs and make them unfit for children to eat.
I have never heard this, not that I’m big into animal husbandry. This is the Word of French classic cooking, and people believe it faithfully. Is it Straight Dope?
I don’t know if they are unfit for children because they taste bad, or for health reasons; I suspect the former.
I’m still unsure of which band name, Constipating Chickens (a la Pumpkins) or The Constipated Chickens (a la Stones) is best.
