When I saw this lampooned in the first movie, I thought for sure I remembered it from the show. Like at the end of an episode, they would talk about the lessons learned that day. Then Carol would take something from the last thing Mike said, and make it dirty, in the form of “I know a ______ I’d like to ______, Mr. Brady.”
But when I actually go try to find video of something like this, I come up empty. Did I retcon my memories based on the movie?
Unfortunately no, its all a back-projection from your memory of the movie.
I think the Brady Bunch movies, especially the first, are so brilliantly done in their writing and casting that they seamlessly merge with your memories of the original and corrupt them by drawing out the unintended[?] irony and ambiguity.
Unfortunately they totally destroyed Gary Cole’s career as far as I’m concerned. I can’t see him in anything now without reliving Mike Brady.
Though I can’t come up with any examples at the moment, I totally have the same vague recollection as the OP. Of course, maybe I’m suffering from memory back projection, as **Backsiaman suggests. I have seen the movie, which what I remember of it is awesome if you’re a Brady fan, but I actually don’t have a clear memory of the scene in the movie, either. It feels like my cloudy recollection is from watching the show years later as an adult and thinking to myself "I sure didn’t pick up on that when I was a kid".
Great movie, but what about his two memorable veep-related roles on TV, one of which is still ongoing? I speak of course of"Bingo Bob" Russell and Kent Davidson.
I don’t think there were any double entendres like that, but I do remember their relationship being portrayed in a way that it would seem they were having lots of fun in the bedroom. I remember casual affection, loving glances, and a playful way they talked. In a way, their relationship seemed much more intimate than most relationships on modern shows where they pretty much do and say anything.
Another show like that is “Leave it to Beaver”. Obviously, a show from the 50’s isn’t going to have sexual entendres or overt affection, but Ward and June are often very close to each other–bodies touching or just a few inches between them. Ward may put his hand around her waist or they may lean with their foreheads together. Nothing too overt, but lots of subtle things which imply they have a very intimate relationship.
Wow*!* I remember that TV movie well (with Karl Malden as the father-in-law) and had no idea that was him. Cole is one of those generically good looking character-actors who simply disappears into any role, like Christopher Guest or Peter Sellers.
You should remember that “The Brady Bunch” broke tv barriers when it was the FIRST series on television that portrayed a man and a woman who were married to each other sharing a bed. Before that, all married couples slept in twin beds a night stand’s width apart. And they had 6 kids sharing a bathroom that had no toilet in it.
So I doubt if on the tv show there was much sexy talk or innuendo between Mike and Carol.
