This show is best viewed with time-shifting. I watched all the movies before their respective intro segments and I highly recommend doing so.
When time-shifted, I enjoyed the Horror Week offerings for the most part:
Anklebiters - Very scary and most Horror movie-like of the offerings.
Eternal Waters - Well constructed short, and I disagree that the mom was bad.
The Malibu Myth - Several good, genuine fright moments (for me).
Open House - Sorta scary, but I agree allowing them to escape so easily ultimately failed to generate tension. (Although I thought his locking of the door tried to accomplish tension) Would’ve been better if the man had to smash down the door, but that would’ve added complexity to the shooting schedule. Shira Lee definitely is unfamiliar with the genre and it shows.
Midnight Snack - Interesting premise, but failed to terrify.
Profile - I disliked this non-horror offering from a black guy who wants to beat into me the fact that he is a disaffected black guy living in black American society. Dude, you’re about as blunt and unsophisticated as three cops trying to teach a suspect a lesson. He may have something to say (about racial profiling), but he sure as heck doesn’t know how to say it yet. WTF, the lunar perspective at the end??
And I was happy to see David May go this week, for his lame comedy offering about the wrestling / copulating couple. His previous offering, Love at First Shot, was also terrible.
Pretty much in agreement. Matene was like some comic stereotype of an angry young black director. “Horror? The way the black man is treated in America is horror! Comedy? The idea that the black man can get justice is a joke! Romance? The true love story in this country is the Man’s love of putting down the brother! Science fiction? The real science fiction in this country is the fiction of white supremacy!”
And Adrianna was wearing clothes.
Still, one of the better episodes, I thought.
I think horror is a difficult premise for a short because it’s hard to create the mood and build tension and have a resolution of some sort within just a few minutes.
Like last week, these films were much more “polished” looking than the previous round. And I agree that it is best to watch the films before watching the intro pieces for each film.
The Malibu Myth - the story was totally predictable and cliche, bad acting, nice camera shots and editing, stupid tag at the end.
Anklebiters - decent premise, cool puppet/monster, needed a better setup or some explanation of what they were
Eternal Waters - meh, it was OK but not that great, editing was a little confusing.
Midnight Snack - not very original, not well-executed, but good makeup/special effects
Open House - I actually liked this one the most. Good buildup and the ghost was pretty spooky.
Profile - what The Controvert said. This was just a terrible attempt to make a statement. I found it insulting.
My DVR channel guide is showing the next episode to be on Monday instead of Tuesday, so heads up!
