Masters of Horror debut tonight 10/27

Here’s a link

The first offering is from an excellent Joe Lansdale story, Incident On and Off a Mountain Road.

Who else will be watching?

This series is going to be off the hook. Argento, Hooper, Landis, other names only horror buffs will recognize- I’m amazed they could actually put this together. I hope the episodes/mini movies live up to the creepiness of the trailers and don’t go all low-budget Outer Limits.

High hopes here too.

I just realized I got the date wrong. It’s starting tomorrow, Friday.

Guess the anticipation got to me.

I read somewhere that The Horror Channel is about to kick off, but I don’t know exactly where on the dial, or when. They’re planning on showing movies without commercials or censorship, as well as interviews and other special features.

This will be TMI for folks who don’t like descriptions of bloody bits.

Well, it’s been shown for two nights now, so anyone who planned to watch has probably seen it.

I’m disappointed but I’m not sure why.

The story as Joe wrote it wasn’t quite as gory. The back story with Ellen’s husband didn’t take up as much time, so there was more tension in the written story than in the film. You didn’t know that Ellen had survival skills.

I was looking forward to the visual of the victims with their eyes drilled out, because Joe described being able to see moonlight through their heads. Also, Joe had Moonface displaying the bodies as doing normal, everyday things, which explained Ellen’s comment about them being a “family.” I didn’t notice that in the film, but maybe it was too dark.

There was no Buddy in the story. He was a nice addition to the film – well done crazy people are always interesting – but having Ellen kill him for no good reason was unnecessary. It changed her from someone killing to survive to someone killing because she could, and I don’t think that was Joe’s point.

I did like that they didn’t have Moonface suddenly reappear from the backseat of her car. That’s been done to death, the bad guy coming back.

Next up is Dreams in the Witch House done by Stuart Gordon.

There were shots of dead people in chairs, dead baby in its stroller etc. but mostly they were tacked up on cross beams. You could see moonlight through their eyes sometimes though.

I thought she killed him to eliminate him as a witness.

Overall I found the episode to be irritating. Is any woman really going to get all hot and bothered over a guy whose big conversational gambit is a story about women selling their children into sex slavery?

Probably. Maybe she figured he was just as bad as Moonface, sitting there for who knows how long, watching Moonface torture and kill those people.

That should have clued her in a little bit.

I wonder if the episode would encourage a horror fan to read more of Lansdale’s stuff. As usual, the story was changed quite a bit.

A friend of mine, Dale Bailey, is having one of his stories, Death and Suffrage adapted for the series. Sam Hamm is doing the teleplay, Joe Dante is directing.

Very cool. Will this be the first time something he’s written has been filmed?

Yes, although his story, The Resurrection Man’s Legacy has been optioned and renewed several times by James Cameron’s company since it was nominated for the Nebula back in '95 or '96. Last time I spoke to him it wasn’t really going anywhere.

He has a website, something like www.dalebailey.com

If you’re pro-zombie and pro-gun control, you’ll love Death and Suffrage.

ADD to my above: Death and Suffrage has been retitled Homecoming for the episode. It airs 2 December. Some photos are up at Dread Central.
