WARNING… Disturbing material!!!
I recently read a very disturbing case study on Onanism and nervous disorders in two little girls. First, does the disorder Onanism really exist?
The study was dated 1879. X... was ten years old and Y was her much younger sister. To get to the point... they could not be restrained from touching themselves. It was very sad and their disorder eventually got so excessive that they had to be restrained. They resorted to forks and other nasty things to use on themselves. Well years later and after trying many different methods by doctors including...sedatives, moral therapy, adivce, coaxing, crulist punishment and religious threats and promises the only conclusion they could arrive at to sucessfully combat Onanism was to use a hot iron and cauterise!!!!
This was very upsetting to me and I can not fathom that doctors would resort to this. Although this was dated 1879 and who know what they did back then. Also, the case study did not give a country of origin and where the case study was done. Although, the author did observe a similar case when he practised in Paris.
Somebody please restore my faith in humanity and tell me that if this disorder really does exists that they have a more humane way to deal with it today. ~Thanks.
P.S.- this reminds me of certian areas in Africa, that when a woman weds she is mutalized to keep her from straying. I think this is morally wrong. What about you and do you think we should accept refugees into this country who are fleeing from female cercumcision?

I recall that a couple of centuries ago scientists on some King’s court also tried to find out what the “natural language” of a human is. They did not talk to a couple of babies, of course the babies finally died, lack of affection.

I know it may seem very silly to even pose the question. And I understand that many torture devices were used to punish people for many different wrong doings in 19th century. But I wonder if it is still considered a disorder today and how do they treat a person who takes pleasing themselves in such a manner to such great lengths that they are causing themselves pain and injury. They probaly consider it a obsessive compulsive disorder. To each his own for masochism, I guess.

I think today that excessive masturbation would be considered a sexual addiction. “Onanism” is so 19th century. And it really is only considered a problem when it a) interferes with your life, and b) gives you no pleasure. Various forms of therapy that do not involve medieval torture are effective. Of course, that applies to adults. I have no idea about kids.
I don’t think the medical opinion of anybody who recommended CAUTERIZATION for this ‘problem’ is going to be very highly thought-of today. Probably says more about how female sexuality was handled at the time than anything else. There may be disorders where people masturbate too much, but I’ve never heard of excessive masturbation itself being a disease.
What you talk about in the latter part of your post is called Female Genital Mutilation today. It’s not done when the women get married (to my knowledge), it’s usually done during childhood - often in sickening ways (glass). It’s just horrifying, and it’s been done to millions of women. UN statistics estimate that it’s been done to nearly all of the women in some countries. I don’t think it’s confined just to Africa, but that’s where it happens the most.
Masturbation should be performed only by your doctor. Self-treatment is medically unwise. Onanism is a serious disorder which, if untreated, leads to libertarianism.

it does sound like olde time nonsense. but is it SO unthinkable that it could be a mental disorder? you can get mental distorders that make people compulsively do things like eat dirt and collect garbage, I would be not surprised at all if there was ‘onanism’. in some people. although the fact that ANY masterbation was concitered a disease in that time period probobly makes it hard to diagnose if they had a problem or were just being normal people.
