I think there’s actually a difference between JOKING about rape, which I’m not about to defend, and calmly, seriously wishing it on anyone, which is indefensible.
Would you people listen to yourselves? Making a quick comment about dropping the soap is one thing. Coming back the next day, all calm-like, and saying “I really believe it’s appropriate for some people to get raped. I support rape in certain circumstances” – I don’t even know what to say to this. Argument is apparently futile. Hope y’all stay out of jail, I guess.
Isn’t prison rape one of the main factors in people getting out of prison even more barbaric and twisted than they were when they went in?
I gotta go with masonite. I was almost on the edge of saying “I can see in a fit of anger or misunderstanding how wishing rape on someone may seem satisfying” because maybe people weren’t actually taking the time to actually think of what that meant.
but they ARE thinking of it, and people not only think it’s fine and an acceptable form of punishment but now I see they are receiving “comfort” at the thought of someone inflicting brutality on someone else. That means there’s one MORE victim and one MORE rapist in the world, and that gives me very LITTLE comfort

Maybe it’s the extreme pacifist in me…
but I try not to (and usually succeed in this) wish rape on anyone. From the kennel that killed my dog to the relatives I have who I’m fairly sure have raped people before (lack of willing/admitting eye-witness testimony prevents them from being prosecuted, along with the statute of limitations, as far as I know). I wouldn’t (and don’t) wish it on the worst of the people I’ve known or heard about.
Being raped and being rehabilitated do not have, IIRC, an especially correlational relationship. I’d (personally) rather a rapist be contributing at least somewhat positively to this society than be permanently unable to do so because that rapist was raped in prison.
Rape, to me, is about as funny as cancer. I don’t see anyone saying “cancer is funny!” Shouldn’t we adopt the same sort of attitude toward rape?
I think the point that several posters are trying to make is that chances are, that guy is the one doing the raping in prison, not the one getting raped.
You know “funny” is very subjective. Maybe you should be saying “prison rape is not funny TO ME” or maybe “i find people who find prison rape funny to be idiots” . Because for alot of people seing some asshole get what he deserves (not that i think it applies to that thread you linked personally) IS funny, or at least deserved. Personally i would laugh my ass off if i heard about say a child abuser getting butt raped in prison, might not be funny to you and it might make you think less of me, but thats just YOUR opinion.
theend - it isn’t just the “funny” part that is the problem. Although rape is decidedly not funny to me, I would not assume that a person is inhuman if they find a rape joke funny, although I would try not to associate with them.
But when people literally believe that it should happen, and they get enjoyment or comfort from it actually happening, that is just sickening beyond belief, and those people should be applying for jobs as demons in hell, where they will get all the pleasure they want from witnessing sadistic and repulsive torture.
While I agree that rape isn’t funny, I don’t see how you can think dead babies are… Some close friends have recently lost their baby to a congenital heart defect and for them this is the most tramatic experience of their lives. For them, a dead baby joke would be repugnant in the extreme.
And somewhere in there lies your answer, I would guess. Almost all (not all) humor has a victim. Physical humor (slapstick), ethnic jokes, blond jokes, on and on and on. How can we justify this? If you can see the humor in dead babies, then I think you can at least see that we as humans find humor in some very odd things. Dead babies aren’t close to your heart but rape, for whatever reason, is. Neither is funny as a reality, but as an abstract, some people find humor in them. I am not a word smith, so perhaps someone else can say this more eloquently, but I do believe that if you look at it objectively, you understand the princple. Heinlein said in Stranger In a Strange Land that “man is the ape that laughs because it hurts too much to cry.” (Forgive my poor memory, but I think that is a close paraphrase.)

It would be nice to have an ideology that removes all violence, but this is the real world. Sit in a courtroom and stare at a remorsless asshole who thinks he’s a badass just because he has enough muscle in his pointer finger to pull a trigger.
There’s a nice balance in prison now. If I had my way, it would look more like Iraqi prisons pre GWII. We strike a balance, the pacafists and me, but some of the pacafist bullshit is drving me crazy. Prisons in the US deserve funding cuts, prisoners in the US don’t deserve cable. They got themselves there, they should be miserable. I know it goes against my left leaning ideals, I know there are many logical, rational arguments against it, but dammit, you can call it revenge or justice or Mabel for all I fuckin care, they deserve to rot a bit. Too many felons get out not really caring if they go back in. I want them to be scared shitless, I want them to scare their buddies, I want them to be afraid of the dark for the rest of their days.
Funny would be shaving them at induction, dressing them as provacatively as possible, super gluing a wig on them and lubing them up before they get kicked into the general pop. Then publicizing the results.

Should a woman who shot someone be raped by male prison guards every day for the rest of her life? How about a woman who wrote a bad check?
Well, under the new fangled NurseCarmen Incarceration System, (NCIS) a bad check writer wouldn’t find herself in rapesville, unless she was stupid enough to be a recividist.

No no no. The punishment should fit the crime. A woman who shot someone should not be raped by guards. She should be shot by them. And not every day, either, maybe every first Friday or on the anniversary of her crimes, or on bank holidays, and probably in a fleshy place where she won’t sustain too much permanent damage.
A woman who wrote a bad check should be spat at with varying degrees of accuracy and denied access to cable television.
Nobody should be raped, unless they raped other people.
There are several things at play here:
I submit humanity’s predilection for “gallows humor” has been around for a good long time – look to T. Andronicus “Lepidus’ limbs are lopp’d” as an example of early use – so it’s not, as some have suggested, a modern development. I submit it’s a defense mechanism, true comic relief, that’s an inherent part of our human makeup.
For some people, the ideal prison is a punitive, not rehabilitative place. Parenthetically, for some of those people, there’s always the Dante-style risk of making the place too devilish, a la Richard Speck, where the pad is chock full of delightful and joyous subjugation topped with street drugs, radiator-fermented orange soda booze and ever-so-popular Wild Anal Sex. Generally, though, those who adhere to the Punitive System just want the place to be a hell-hole complete with regular buggery and other, pointier, non-zonal shankings.
Finally, there are those like Bandanaman. Scarf-boy can conceive of nothing worse than buggery, likely because he is a self-loathing latent homosexual who privately has a Daddy complex.
If you want rape to be the punishment for rape, then try to get a law passed. If it does, I can go become a hermit and try to forget the human race exists.
But surely you must agree that until that law is passed, in current prison rape situation, in which it is the weaker and more effeminate prisoners who are more likely to be raped, we must eliminate prison rape.
