In both Iraq and Afghanistan we’ve seen that ‘elections’ are a three stage process:

1. Everyone strains their utmost to cheat their way to as big a ‘stake’ they can get away with.

2. Contest own and others stake by any available means.

3. Negotiate among selves for the spoils.

The pretty obvious one that touting ‘elections’ as some sort of ‘all’s well that ends well’ is idiotic.

Seven weeks after Iraqis went to the polls, a special elections court disqualified a winning parliamentary candidate, likely reversing the narrow defeat of Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki’s coalition and possibly allowing him the first chance to form a new coalition government.
