Once-popular songs that are no longer socially acceptable

I picked up a little Czech when I was in Prague.

She was fantastic!

(Probably NSFW.)

And not at all Nazi.

But it really pokes fun at the bigots-
We talk real funny down here
We drink too much and we laugh too loud
We’re too dumb to make it in no Northern town
And we’re keepin’ the n*****s down

We got no necked oilmen from Texas
And good ol’ boys from Tennessee
And colleges men from LSU
Went in dumb, come out dumb too
Hustlin’ 'round Atlanta in their alligator shoes
Gettin’ drunk every weekend at the barbecues

  • killing an arab - The Cure … probably very problematic today
  • pretty much anything by David Coverdale (slide it in, lay down - stay down, ready and willing, spit it out,…)
  • Flying (I jumped out the window to get to the parking lot) - Living Colour (an extremely cynical 9/11 reference which always surprised me for its lack of pushback)

Heh. It never occurred to me that it might be pronounced another way.

You never mistook it for the English word “lied”?

No, I haven’t. (Lots of German in high school and college.)

But not the bigots you might be thinking it is.

It starts out this way:

Last night I saw Lester Maddox on a TV show
With some smart a** New York Jew
And the Jew laughed at Lester Maddox
And the audience laughed at Lester Maddox too
Well he may be a fool but he’s our fool
If they think they’re better than him they’re wrong

The “New York Jew” was Dick Cavett, a Nebraskan who was not Jewish. (Here’s a gift link to a contemporary NYT article about the incident.)

The character singing the song talks about all the stereotypical things Northerners believe about Southern bigots who are trying to “keep the n******s down.”

But then he talks about how black people in the North have it better.

Down here we’re too ignorant to realize
That the North has set the n***** free
Yes he’s free to be put in a cage
In Harlem in New York City
And he’s free to be put in a cage
On the South Side of Chicago
And the West Side
And he’s free to be put in a cage
In Hough in Cleveland
And he’s free to be put in a cage
In East St. Louis
And he’s free to be put in a cage
In Fillmore in San Francisco
And he’s free to be put in a cage
In Roxbury in Boston
They’re gatherin’ ‘em up from miles around
Keepin’ the n*****s down.

So the listener starts out with a smug sense of superiority over this redneck character, but by the end realizes that Northerners may not be quite so much better than Southerners after all.

And the redneck knows it.

Ausgezeichnet!

The word is “goon”, not “coon.”

Along with Monty Python’s “Never Be Rude to an Arab.”

I don’t think that many people still have a problem with Albert Camus.

I cringe at the lyrics of Tom Jones’ “She’s a Lady.” Some of the gems from it:

“But she always knows her place / She’s got style, she’s got grace, she’s a winner”

“Well, she’s never in the way / Always something nice to say, and what a blessin’
I can leave her on her own / Knowin’ she’s okay alone and there’s no messin’”

“Well, she never asks very much / And I don’t refuse her
Always treat her with respect / I never would abuse her”

So he’s found himself a woman who is not only sexy and stylish, but also apparently submissive and meek. And he wants a prize for not being abusive to her. Yuck.

It’s from the same root as the italian word fasces which was adopted as a symbol by a certain political party. Are Fascists ok with being called faggots?

Living Doll by Cliff Richard has the worrying line about locking her up in a trunk. The Comic Relief version lampshaded this by having Neil say he felt sorry for the elephant.

I haven’t heard Ahab The Arab by Ray Stevens since it first came out.

Yeah, because it’s old AF. I wouldn’t expect to hear it in a film or tv show unless it took place during the Vietnam War or something.

OTOH, I actually never read (or could properly hear most of) the lyrics before now. It’s pretty much about having sex with underage black slave girls…so…yeah…

Still catchy though.

Played it a billion times on my KTEL record along with Yummy Yummy Yummy

Yeah, I forgot. They never play 60s music in films or tv anymore.

Paint It Black and Sympathy For the Devil still get quite a bit of play.
