Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - discussion

Review

The trailers look good. I like the time period and the Brad Pitt & DiCaprio characters are appealing. I’m excited Kurt Russell has a role.

I am concerned about the Manson murders. I don’t want to see that exploited. This is a Tarantino movie. Violence is his thing. 'll wait awhile before seeing the movie and learn more.

I say there is zero chance the Sharon Tate figure dies (violently) in the film, more than likely an alternate universe where she kills Manson. I would be stunned if QT has her dying same way as in reality, especially with his love of Hollywood and the period, not to mention the morbidity surrounding the 50th anniversary of her death (why isn’t this being released on Friday August 9, 1969, the exact date, anyway?)

I am expecting the most amazingly accurate looking late 60’s period piece ever, based on the little bits seen in the trailer.

They drop a hint about Pitt’s character Cliff in my quote.

There’s a lot of excitement around this movie. Hope it’s a good one.

I saw that- guessing it means Pitt and/or DiCaprio kill Manson before he kills Robbie?

I wish Kurt had been given a bigger part. I still think of him in Escape from NY. He can play a serious bad ass.

Granted it’s Tarantino and he’s known for revising history, but IRL Manson was nowhere near Tate’s house on the night of the murders.

Who’s’ to say it’s not the same universe as Inglourious Basterds and Pulp Fiction. Hitler was killed in a fire, Sharon Tate and her friends never died, and the best picture Oscar of 1972 was a Roman Polanski film starring Sharon Tate and Marlon Brando. It was President JFK’s favorite film, and he invited them to the WH (during his third term), along with Russian Federation President Sakharov.

That seems plausible - I can’t see QT doing a historically correct retelling of the Happenings, it’s not his style and would not fit with his preferences.

When I first saw the trailer, I was shocked by the appearance of Sharon Tate. Even 50 years later, her death and the others is nothing to be sensationalized. Not only don’t I like Tarantino’s movies, this goes on my never, ever to be watched list.

Edit: The one good thing is that Manson and gone and someone won’t do a completely tasteless interview about what he thought of the movie.

How do you know if it is sensationalised? and what shocked you about her appearance?

Just FYI, the script had the approval of the Tate estate prior to shooting.

In other words, it is completely NOT as you say.

Taking my daughter tonight, 4pm showing, 35mm AVX sound, can’t wait!

Tate’s sister was initially quite vocally unhappy about the film but Tarantino worked with her and things got better. She has now seen the film and really likes Robbie’s performance.

Tarantino has been saying that he’s almost done making movies. Maybe one more.

This sort of sounds like awards trolling to me. “Hey, this might be his last or at least last good film. Let’s give it all the awards.” (Plus Hollywood loves giving awards to movies about itself anyway.)

If the Tate figure was going to die (she isn’t “Sharon Tate” in the movie, correct?), the Tate family would already know, and would (rightfully) be protesting- but they aren’t.

eta- I see she the character is in fact named Sharon Tate, so no way she dies as IRL- surely an alternate universe type deal- QT doesn’t do historical reenactments anyway.

The “10 films” thing has always been a part of his brand. Of course, he’s already reached it:

RD
PF
JB
KB1
KB2
Grindhouse
IB
DU
H8
Once

And of course it’s award trolling. So was Jackie, Inglorious, and Django.

Yeah, that kind of talk is as believable as JK Rowling never returning to Harry Potter…

It’s not over until it’s over. From the article you linked:

"Still, Tate is holding some reservations until she sees the final product; though she remains optimistic. “I met [Robbie] and I was very happy with her as an actress,” she told Grazia Daily. “I just hope they do Sharon’s true character justice. My fear is that things will fall short as they always have in the past. With each film that comes out, I hope they will do it right and I’ve always been disappointed. But with this one I’m extremely hopeful.”

Despite her initial concerns, it seems as if Sharon Tate’s sister Debra is OK with Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood — just so long as the film honors her sister’s memory rather than tarnishing it."

I sincerely hope that Debra is satisfied with the movie.

I’m relieved to see that Debra is happy with the film. Still will never see it. To those that do, hope you enjoy!

"Of course, Debra’s rave review comes after months of trepidation over how her late sister would be played on the big screen. We broke the story … she actually met with Tarantino and voiced her concerns to him, and he assured her he and Margot would do Sharon right.

Debra tells us … “I wasn’t disappointed.”

She says the famed director did everything he promised her he would do, and she adds … “It’s the first time ever that I haven’t been lied to or tricked or not given any consideration whatsoever” about how Sharon is portrayed.”

From everything I know about the guy, if she liked the script, she’ll pretty much enjoy the movie as Tarantino doesn’t start a film until he has a finished script in hand. And he knows when a script is finished when he thinks it’s good enough to be sold as a book.

Also, the Ringer has a number of articles and podcasts they put together for QT week.

Why would they be protesting that she dies in the movie? She died in real life. Quite horribly. Any movie that was true to facts would have her dying. (and don’t forget all the others that died, even though everyone always seems to forget)

I’m not sure I understand your point.

I think some QT movie with an alternate history for the murders is much more insulting. That turns Tate et. al. into props for QT’s ego. But I guess we are living in a post-truth world.
