One advantage to an incredibly slow board

you know how you go to a bookstore, and buy a book because it looks interesting, and then it sits on your bookshelf for years because you’re tired after working all day and would rather watch TV?

I’ve been reading those books!! I’m part way through Tribe, “Constitutional Choices,” which I bought, oh, around 1987? Next up: “The Least Dangerous Branch.”

I usually check the board in the mornings when the MB is fast and read during the lunchtime slowdown. I also read to pass time on the bus to and from work. I’m on book 4 now (The Hand of Oberon). I wonder if anyone ever tried to make a feature film out of the Amber books? Of course, it would have to be animated, or live action with an animated background.

Don’t tell me you guys just click on one link & wait there for it to load…

I think it’s great. I love the characters. Especially Corwin.

It’s been talked about, in the mid-90s. At the time, I thought Jonathan Frakes would be a good Corwin; also Tim Roth as Random. Don’t know how it would go now.

Kat: Corwin really grabbed me, reading it for the first time as a depressed seventh-grader. He’s one of those guys who is just “in the room”.

It’s probably just as well. The studio would probably want The Rock or someone as Gérard.

Hey, I can see The Rock in there somewhere…maybe Benedict…Yeah, Benedict! “He generally does rule, wherever he is. He is simply that sort of man.”

Gah! Benedict doesn’t strike me as a wrestler type, in either build or attitude. I see him as having more of an Eastwood physique.

I’ve made it to the end of Sign of the Unicorn.

handy’s right, one should have at least two instances of The Straight Dope Message Board running at all times, to prevent downtime.

I don’t understand how having two SDMB screens open simultaneously would be beneficial. Wouldn’t that mean you’d have two screens that were loading slowly? And of course, the enterprise would slow things down even more, since you would be doubling the strain on the server from what you yourself would normally provide.

Or am I missing something…

Just have one ready to read while the other one is loading. I have a dsl connection, and the damn thing still takes upwards of a minute to load. It doesn’t really increase the strain on the servers, it just decreases the amount of time I spend on the boards, cause I’d be loading all of the pages anyway.
