All I wanted to do was reply to a post. I typed in my reply, hit submit, and proceeded to wait…and wait…and wait…like 5 minutes go by, and it times out, then I try again, and again, and again, so finally, like 15 minutes later am I able to submit my post.
Oh and don’t even get me started on how long it took to open this “new thread” form. That’s another 10 minutes of my life wasted. And I can barely even stand to read the board anymore because of how long it takes for anything to come up. I have to look down the list of threads and figure out the two or three that look the best, because by the time the page loads up, my day will be over. So there are a ton of other threads I would like to read but don’t because I can’t stand to wait so long for the page to load! And also, there are tons of threads I would like to respond to or comment on, and it just doesn’t seem worth it most of the time.
I’d probably have 1,000 posts now if posting didn’t take so damn long!
OK, I know that it takes so long because this is a gigantic site, and there’s lots of traffic here. And it seems to get busier during the late afternoon. But it’s just so damn frustrating! Is there anything we can do to speed things up???
(Ok now I’ll hit the submit button and settle in for a 10-minute wait.)
birdgirl, I was reading another thread that you had replied to, and I reloaded the page to check for other replies before I replied. About 15 minutes pass. The page reloads…now with your first reply and its double post.
One learns patience from this board.
Indeedy. Complaining doesn’t help: it just takes up more space. You must learn to go about your daily business … cleaning the house, making dinner, doing busywork, playing video games … while you wait for the post to go through like the rest of us have.
Don’t focus on the time you spent, focus on the magnificence that is this thread you have created [sub]cough twice[/sub]. Who else can lay claim to the poetic marriage of insight and insolence that is your profound OP?
Now sit back and admire your creation, proudly put forth for all to enjoy. Your hands have now joined through the ages with those every artist who has ever put chisel to marble or ballpoint pen to the Sunday Jumble.
Next time you are about to start a thread, just before you hit SUBMIT, hit ALT+F4 on your keyboard. Basically it reverses the auto-cache load times and dynamically defragments the hamst0r matrix.
Trust me on this one.
It works especially well for superfluous OPs like this one!
I used to get upset about the occasional slowness of the board. But after travelling around to many message boards, I’ve only found one of comparable size that is appreciably faster. That one is Something Awful, and the reason is that they charge people to register, and Lowtax(the webmaster) uses that money to upgrade the servers pretty regularly. I’ve never seen another free board this big that doesn’t suffer from the same problems. Hell, I’ve seen boards a fraction of this size that have way more slowness problems. I know it’s annoying, but they’re doing it for free, so who are we to complain.
I have played a million bajillion games of solitaire waiting for stuff to load. I don’t even like solitaire. Tells you how much I luuuurve this board. Try to see it as a chance to get Zen, contemplate a koan or two.
I would never wish death on anyone. Death is too merciful. Eternal life - now that’s torture without effort. Or some nice, long, detailed curse involving ravenous animals and pointy objects.
I have issues with Monty, but I still like him.

I opened this thread because I looked at the OP too fast and saw biggirl. I thought it would be a hilarious sendup of people who complain about the slowness of the boards, instead I get… this.
As others have said, birdgirl, it used to be much, much worse.
Yeah, Juanita, me too. In fact, when I opened up this board half an hour ago, the first 5 threads I clicked on all gave me that stupid “this page cannot be displayed message”. Seems like I get that more often than I get the actual thread I’m trying to read.
I’ve also gotten into the habit of copying the text from any post I’m trying to make. Especially if it’s kinda long, because as often as not, the hamsters get to it before it gets to the board.
My problem is that three or four times now, the hamsters have decided to post only part of my response, making me look stupid, or at the very least like I just wandered off in the middle of a word. Most recently it happened in the David Brinkley thread.
If this post ends mid-sentence, we’ll know that the hamsters have a sense of humor.
