Or do you sit and wait, like a big dumb sheep?
It bugs the hell out of me how slow these boards get sometimes. And I refuse to come on here when it’s slow because it’s miserable. I wager that many of you do the same thing. It’s too bad, because I think some very good posts are never made because we don’t want to sit and wait for this thing!
So, do you wait, or do you move on to something else when the SDMB is slow?
Nah. I always have at least two browser windows open so I can happily surf the rest of the internet while the SDMB loads. If the site’s being stubborn and really won’t load, I’ll wait about 10 minutes or so and try again. That usually works for me.
At the risk of contributing to a slowdown of the board, I’ll tell you what I do:
I load the main page (like ‘great debates’), then as I pick the threads I want to read, I right-click the link and open in a new window, which I minimize. By the time I’ve opened all the threads I want to read, the first one has usually loaded. The rest of them load in the background while I’m reading the first one.
If the board’s really slow, I’ll open a page for each of the main boards I read, do the right-click read thing through each of them, then do something else while they all load. Sometimes I’ll have 20 browser windows open. Then I’ll come back after they have all loaded, and read to my heart’s content.
I’ve wondered if other folks get headahces from waiting for the damn pages to load. I try and read some threads at work (during lunch, of course, ) and can’t get to many because, well, all you other folks are doing the same damn thing.
Go away! I got reading to do and work to avoid!
Actually, I also employ the Sam Stone method. Seems to work the best. But if it’s too slow I give up go back to work.
I use Sam Stone’s method too. The Opera browser makes it a lot easier, since the multiple document interface allows you to open simultaneous threads without spawning new windows and cluttering up your taskbar.
I pointlessly browse during the off times, using the Sam Stone method. It works best for me, as it makes it so that by the time I’m done with one thread, the others are loaded and ready.
Netscape 7 does the multiple documents in one window (or tabs) thing too. It’s excellent. The way I have it set up now, I just have to Ctrl-click and it’ll open in a new tab and load in the background. I can go down GQ and get 20 threads loading in a matter of 30 seconds. Then I do something else for a minute or two, and come back when they’re done loading. It’s much more efficient than what I used to do in Netscape 6, which was Sam Stone’s way.
Same deal. Opera, multiple windows. Of course, if they are all running too slowly, I’ll just click the whole thing off and play solitaire. I do have some standards.
I avoid the SDMB between 10am and 7pm on weekdays because it is sooo incredibly slow. (And I have a sneaking suspicion that it is busy then because people are doping while they are supposed to be working. Do you people have no work ethic?) I have Road Runner, too. Can’t imagine how slow it is for poor bastards do without DSL or cable.
I make it a point to visit during off hours, usually past 11pm HST, 2am PST. Most of the country is asleep during those hours, and the board is nice and zippy.
I open several websites & boards so when one is slow I read the others. I do post
less here cause it takes too long to post sometimes. But 2 minutes later the speed
might pick up.
It’s best to open the main message list page & keep that open & right click (PCs) on
a topic & select ‘open in new window’ & do this for all topics you want to read.
