One day in Johannesburg/Pretoria, what could I see?

Next week I have to travel to Johannesburg to supervise a TV commercial shooting (I’ll be doing the VFX work for it) I arrive on the 17th, shooting on 18th and 19th and then I have the 20th for myself before departing on the 21st late in the afternoon.

Actually I’ll take the chance to get a new passport at my countries embassy in Pretoria, since Uruguay doesn’t have an embassy in Bangkok. From what the embassy told me I can get it done in a couple hours, so lets say before noon.

I’d love to visit a game reserve, as I think they are named there, seen some wildlife, but I have no idea if there’s any close enough to Johannesburg or Pretoria that can be worth visiting for a single day. Any suggestions?

The Pilanesberg Game Reservehttp://pilanesberggamereserve.co.za/ is about 2 hours drive (160km) from Johannesburg/Pretoria which would be doable if you have a full day.

There is also the Lion Park http://www.lion-park.com/, probably about 30 to 45 minutes drives and Lion and Rhino Park http://www.rhinolion.co.za/homethat are just outside Johannesburg but there are not as varied as the Pilanesberg and a lot smaller. With the two lion parks you drive through smallish enclosures where the Lions are kept so you will be guaranteed to see them which would not be the case in the Pilanesberg.

Pilanesberg looks interesting, very interesting. Thank you.
Not sure about the other two though… if I come back and my GF sees a photo of me petting a lion cub I’m a dead man.

Another interesting place close to Johannesburg/Pretoria is The Cradle of Humankind and the Sterkfontein Caves which is where some world-famous hominid fossils have been found. Have a look at http://www.maropeng.co.za for some more info. If you are interested I would suggest visiting both Maropeng and the Sterkfontein caves on a combined ticket.
