One fewer pregnant Doper... (Brendan is here!)

Brendan Michael
10/29/01, 11:42 PM (on his due date, even)
9 lbs, 6 oz, 22 inches long
15.5 inch head circumference!

We had quite an interesting ride on the way: having him flip from head-down to butt-down-breech a few days before his due date (flipped back, more on that in a moment), being diagnosed with polyhydramnios (too much amniotic fluid, about 3 LITERS of it) at the last minute - literally the day he was born, then having my water break during a non-stress test right after that diagnosis and ending up at the hospital instead of the birth center as planned, and the hospital insisting on pitocin despite the fact that my labor was progressing at a reasonable pace, and me actually avoiding pain meds despite both pitocin and the fact that I progressed from 4 cm to 10 cm in just over an hour!! Pushed for less than half an hour, and despite that massive head (which, by the way did not mold, so I gave birth to him at that size…), not one stitch needed.

Let me just say, HypnoBirthing really WORKED. Not just for the dealing with pitocin without needing pain meds, but also for turning the breech presentation - we did a hypnosis script to get the boyo to turn head-down, which worked within 12 hours. (maternal stress/muscle tension is one of the causes of them not turning back on their own, it seems - you have to really relax the muscles to give them the space to shift, and hypnosis is a speedy way to address hidden stresses.) Even the hospital nursing staff, who are usually very casual about administering meds, were rooting for me to go the whole distance without, partly because of how wonderfully they thought I was doing. Compared to the media version of birth, and to the usual reaction to pitocin, it was a very peaceful, nearly silent, calm labor (apparently I even smiled during contractions!) - it was a lot of effort on the inside, staying focused and really working to relax and move out of the way of the contractions, but it didn’t show much! (though I admit to wanting to smile during contractions, especially every time I felt him move downwards with one - I just didn’t think I had smiled!)

Anyway, lots of unexpected stuff, but a great experience nonetheless. My recovery is going well, and we’re adjusting fast to the new addition. He’s totally beautiful (of course), and his big brother is thrilled to have him around (so far!).

Pics (the one of epeepunk is not a great pic, but the rest aren’t bad): http://www.babiesonline.com/babies/b/brendanandgabe/

Awww… what a cutie!

Congratulations!

Very sweet. How big was that head again?

I like the picture with his older brother. Congratulations to you all.

Congratulations from a stranger passing by.

Congratulations! Wonderful, wonderful news!

Zette

Wow! You birthed that? Jesus Christ, he’s huge! Did he come out wearing that red t-shirt? Eh? What’s that? Oh…the smaller one is the baby. Gotcha.
Congratulations.

Congratulations on your new arrival! Those are some good-lookin’ kids.

Congratulations! Absolutely adorable!

i gotta admit i was with bouv for a brief second there. until i scrolled down a bit.

congratulations!!! what cuties!!

Congratulations to you all. Such a fine looking child.

Congratulations!

I also ended up on pitocin. Apparently the pain of an induced birth is four times worse than that of a natural birth. You rock (well you already do for bringing a new life into the world) for being able to handle it on no drugs!

Nine pounds! [sub]The Ujest kids were 7 pounds each. [/sub]

Egods! Sign the little nipper up for football right NOW! Think of your retirment!

Natural child birth…what! you did it with out make up on?
Congrats and very very very happy (x 10000) that everyone is healthy and everything went great.

Thanks for sharing your story!

Welcome to the Giant Baby Club[sup]tm[/sup]! My first was only 8lbs 6oz, but her head was huge. The second one came out swinging at 9lbs 10oz, and she was the one I didn’t need medication for.

You all look lovely. Congratulations!

What beautiful, beautiful boys! Congratulations.

I missed this yesterday, and was wondering when you’d get around to this thread…

Y’all will get a kick out of this: Brendan sounds like a squeaky cow-toy when he cries. He’s got a cute little cry, one that gets your attention without lifting the top of your head off.

His cousin (my daughter) has decided she’s Brendan’s sister. Never mind the actual relationships, she’s decreed it so. Gabe’s pretty puffed-up about being a big brother, too. Terribly cute!

Well done, hedra! (not that you needed me to tell you that!)

Congratulations! He looks like he’s about 3 months old isntead of a newborn. He’s adorable.

hedra–
We haven’t talked before, but I wanted to add my congratulations to the chorus–your boys are simply beautiful. I had my first son back in May with pitocin induction—OUCH! I just wanted to let you know how much I admire you for being able to go med-free. I, too, went with no epidural–but trust me, it wasn’t voluntary! (lil’guy was facing the wrong way) So congrats and enjoy, it won’t be long till you’re chasing him around along with his big brother.

Good job! You have beautiful boys!
And great job on the name too (my hubby is Brendan too!)
He’ll be a cool guy!

It’s good to see the Doper Baby Boom is still in full swing… what on Earth were you guys talking about 9 or so months ago??

Congratulations on the arrival of Brendan - and well done on the name too!

Congratulations! Wow, that’s a big kid. Enjoy him
