Actually, only the second half of the Maryland/Arizona basketball game. Why is this guy considered such an expert? His references are inanne, overblown and repedative. What’s a diaper dandy? Does it have anything to do with the fact that he uses the word “baby” every other sentance? Is he like this IRL? If so, can you imagine his wife having sex with him? “That’s it, baby, suck harder! You’re a real diaper dandy, kiddo, one of the best coached in the nation! I love watching you do what you do best, baby!” Good lord! His commentary is even worse. “That’s what I love about college basketball, it’s one sport where you never know what’s going to happen!” Really? And you know what’s going to happen in other sports? Along the same lines: “That’s why they play the games, baby!” Well, Duh! After a timeout: “Here’s the time when the coaches really have to plan their strategy.” Oh? I thought they called the TO just to discuss Madonna’s rendition of “American Pie”. Why is it that this flaming moron of a mouth is considered the “best”? Is intelegent commentary beyond the average sports fan on ESPN? GAH!
Now Dave, I know you weren’t talking about Dick Vitale. If you were however, and you really did question his expertness, then you, sir, are delusional(or you were listening to a fake Dick)
Is Intelligent commentary beyond ESPN? I don’t think so, but if you’re looking for intellectual commentary, you won’t find it. It’s basketball, not fucking Equestrian olympics or Squash or some shit, with British pomp and circumstance.
I have to admit, I never would use those words in a sentance about Dickie V.
I have no doubt that Vitale knows College Basketball. However, when Vitale is getting on my nerves (which usually happens with about 5 minutes to go in the first half), I just turn the sound down on the TV. Problem solved.
Oh, I know he knows basketball, there is no doubt about that. He just dosen’t share very much of that knowledge, instead using empty catch phrases and feeding his cult of personality.
Unfortunately, that is not an act. That is Dick Vitale. He has not changed (on camera or off) since I first encountered him coaching University of Detroit basketball some 20 really odd years ago (when I knew a couple of folks who had to deal with him at the school). I certainly find the demeanor annoying, but it appears to be genuine.
Sure he is annoying, but is he any worse than John Madden? At least Dickie V follows the action and knows the names of the people involved. Not that I dont like and/or respect Madden (or Dickie V for that matter), they are personalities. Like Cosell before them. Love them or hate them most everybody knows who they are.
