One-Handed Deck Cuts

Last night, while watching a movie I was fooling around with a deck of cards and managed to teach myself how to cut the cards with one-hand (and without setting the cards down  ). II had nothing to go on at all and I am wondering if my method is well known among card trick types. Lemme try to explain what I do:

  1. With the deck pointing away from your body, place the deck in your hand with your thumb at the bottom short end closest to you), second and fourth fingers at the top, and your pinkie on the lefthand long-side (if you are using your right hand. Your middle finger does nothing at this time.

  2. SPlit the deck at the top side with your second finger and rotate it clockwise with that finger. Now your thumb should form the axis point fo the two halves, your second finger the top of the bottom half and the the fourth and pinkie fingers in the original spots on the top half.

  3. Take you middle finger and wedge it between the two halves and grip the top half, so now you have the top half held on three sides by your middle finger, you fourth finger and your pinkie.

  4. Pull the bottom fo the bootm ahlf away yusing your thumb. You now have the deck split into two parts, the β€œtop” half is helfd by your pinkie through middle finger on three sides and the "bottom half is held by your thumb and your second finger.

  5. With much hand streetching, dip slightly the top half and move the bottom half over it so that the bottom half is now on top. Basically that is it.

I know I am showing too much interest in this.

One-Hand Cut & Fan

The move described in the link above is the Charlier cut. In brief: hold the deck with the thumb on one long side and the second and third fingers on the other side, with the index finger and pinky squaring up the short sides. With your thumb, drop half the deck into your palm (packet 1), maintaining the grip on the top half (packet 2). Use your index finger to push packet 1 up against your thumb, then pull your thumb out of the way and let Packet 2 fall into your palm. Then just push Packet 1 down on top of Packet 2 with your thumb.

The other one I do is the Swing Cut: start in the same grip. Bring your index finger around to the side with your second and third finger and use it to break off half the pack. Gripping this packet between your thumb and index finger, pull it toward your thumb until it clears the top half and the top half falls to rest in your third, fourth, and pinky fingers. Then put the bottom half back on top. This is a good move to learn, as it prepares you for the one-handed shuffle.

All far easier shown than said.
