One month later-a follow up on SDMB progress

I agree.

I’m not holding my breath.

I have a towel if any of you crybabies need to borrow it.

Expecting to get what we’ve been repeatedly told we’ll get is being a crybaby?

You mean continually whining about it? Then yes.

What a shitty thing to say, dumbass much? Or are you just commenting because you have nothing better to do?

Yes, this step is going to kill the Boards for good.

Just like the switch to pay-for-post was going to kill the Boards for good.

My own, highly individual, highly prejudiced, and highly parochial view is that the pay-to-post switch lost us exactly ONE really good, contributing member, and that that individual later returned.

I am a bit skeptical of any of these “this will kill the board” claims. Like doomsday prophets that wail about the end of the world, and then quietly slink away when the appointed day arrives and nothing happens, these prophets return to the soapbox to confidently predict the NEXT doomsday, with little attention paid to their previous predictive errors.

And Armegeddon sick of it.

I find it ridiculous all the wailing and gnashing of teeth over $7.50 or $15. Just couple of months ago this board was in danger of being closed down. They said the changes would take at couple months, so give them a couple months for fuck sakes!

As has been pointed out many many times, if you can’t afford it, you can ask for your subscription to be paid for.

Funny how many folks will start a Pit thread to lambaste some store or service provider when they feel they were given shitty service or overcharged, but when the topic of shitty service or less than ethical practices by TPTB arises, their attitude changes.

It’s not about the money, kids. It’s about them pissing on my leg and telling me it’s raining.

If you want to pay your money without question, good on ya! That’s your prerogative. It’s also the right of those who feel like we’re being fed yet another line of bullshit to say so.

And yet you continue to post here! Why do you persist in subjecting yourself to such unconscionable abuse?

I don’t mind that I paid (although I’ll stop paying when No Pay-to-Post is implemented again, but some of the stuff the management of the boards are talking about is ridiculous.

Setting up a deal with an ad network takes days, not months, and if you go to the Chicago Reader page, you’ll see plenty of ads already working. It would take almost zero effort to expand that out to the SDMB.

That’s what people don’t appreciate, unrealistic claims. And they also don’t like being called crybabies when the unrealistic claims are called out.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but what **Bricker ** said.

Because I’ve paid for that privilege, which will expire somewhere around 10 May. Your attempt at snark was weak. Try again.

I think this is a “conspiracy” by “the man” to “purge charter Members”.

What is unrealistic? Ed said in his original post a couple of months, he then amended it here to June or July with the reason being the ad revenue was not going as well as originally hoped. Yes** setting up ** a deal may take days, but finding the right deal may take longer.

The three options available to everyone have been clearly spelled out.

  1. Renew
  2. Don’t renew
  3. Request sponsorship

Bitching and moaning isn’t going to change anything.

I read the OP and a vast majority of posts in this thread, and I didn’t get the “this will kill the Boards” idea. Heaven forfend that I accuse you wrongly of building a nice little strawman, but it certainly seems like it to me.

The OP had nothing to do with “the end of the board”, it had to do with how the Reader is treating its subscribers. And it has an actual point to it. If you think all is rosy and fine, have at it. Personally I think members have been treated kinda crappy by the powers that be, but 8 bucks is pretty much nothing to me, so I don’t worry too much. But your strawman only distracts from the entire point of the OP.

He probably got it from this:

ETA: whoah, you’re almost my post count/regdate twin.

I was reacting to this:

Perhaps I should have quoted to make that clearer.

The SDMB Powers That Be Defense Force is all strawmen all the time. Here’s a handy guide:

What the complainers say = what they really mean
Valid, reasonable complaints = wailing, gnashing of teeth, rending garments
This is bad for the SDMB = this will be the end of the SDMB
15 dollars = a king’s ransom only affordable by the haves and have-mores

The problem with that is that any set of ads would make more money than no ads.

Hell, Google even offers graphical ads now that pay a bit more than text ads. Using those as “placeholders” until a real ad deal are in place would go a very long way on a highly trafficked site like the SDMB.
