Saw it again today, and I either didn’t pay close enough attention, or it’s assumed you would know from Bible study.
Who is the disciple with Mary throughout most of the film? I thought initially Peter, but think it’s more likely Joseph of Arimathea. Or could it, for some reason, the one in Gethsamane whose robes are torn off?
(I’m going to feel incredibly stupid for now knowing this when the answer comes in)
I haven’t seen the movie, but assuming that you are talking about Mary, the mother of Jesus rather than Mary Magdalene, then at a guess I would say that it was John. When Jesus was on the cross, he asked John to look after his mother, so it would be safe to assume they were close already.
“The disciple that Jesus loved” is a euphamistic way of saying John, since it was John’s gospel that this was recorded in.
The disciple whose robes were torn off is assumed to be Mark as it is his gospel that mentions it, again not mentioning himself explicitly.
Yes, it was John, although possibly conflated with with another disciple at a few points.
Peter was the one who fought the temple guards vigorously in the garden, slicing one’s ear off, and then dropping his weapon upon Jesus’ request. Peter also denied Jesus three times during/after the hearing in the temple. As far as I know, he, John, and Judas Iscariot were the only identifiable disciples.
