One-off wonders?

What do you get when you cross Cibo Matto with the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion? You get a mashed up masterpiece for the ages: Butter 08 by Butter 08. But you only get it once.

Other masterpieces whose value might’ve been diluted by followups:

***Grace ***by Jeff Buckley
Miss America by Mary Margaret O’Hara
The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill by Lauryn Hill

And not really a masterpiece (except for “Queenie”), but still a one-off:
Happy Days, Sweetheart by Ethyl Meatplow

Obviously I’ve left a lot out. . . .

I don’t have the slightest idea who any of those people are, but I just wanted to say that I liked your post.

ETA: I went to grade school with a girl named Mary Margaret O’Hara. How old is the one you’re talking about?

Canadian? Sister of Catherine O’Hara? There are probably lots of Mother O’Haras who named their daughters Mary Margaret.

I preferred Sketches From My Sweetheart, The Drunk, at the time I was way more into lo-fi sounding stuff.

Not Canadian, but lived in Niagara Falls, New York, but close. Don’t know if she had a sister, but as a good Catholic girl, she probably did. Her father was a city councilman in Niagara Falls, NY in the 60’s.

I know there are probably a lot of MMO’H’s out there, buttcha never know. It’s a danged small world.

Spiderland by Slint.

Think they had an EP out beforehand, but that’s their one album. Still sounds awesome today.

Yeah but not “canon.” Those were demos, sketches, never intended for release. And though it’s listenable, it’s not epoch making, like ***Grace ***was.

I think I posted this in a previous thread like this.

Arc Angels - Arc Angels

They were Doyle Bramhall II, Charlie Sexton, Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon (the last two from SRV’s band Double Trouble.) Most of my friends and I thought it was a great album. Unfortunately drugs got in the way. I heard something about them trying to get back together last year and maybe a tour but nothing around here.

In fact I think I’ll put it on when I get home.
