What? Someone was shot at dinner?
No. Let me explain. I woke up at 6:40 Saturday morning. Shortly after half-past nine I was in my car and driving south. Twenty-two hours later, I was in Orange, CA. (If you ever have a chance to take a road trip through the southern half of Washington and the northern half of Oregon, pass it up. Traffic is hell.) Since I arrived around 7:30, my hotel room was not ready. I managed a half-hour catnap in the car, but it was too bright and warm to sleep. Besides, I had stuff to do. (I’ve just awoken from a two-plus hour nap.)
Anyway I have to repeat the trip in reverse Sunday morning, there will no doubt be too much food to eat at the family gathering tomorrow, so tonight is my one shot at eating a dinner that I won’t be able to have again for a while.
I thought I had it. Pinnacle Peak! When I worked here, they were never open when I was in OC. I loved the Pinnacle Peak in San Diego when I was a kid. Unfortunately, the one off of the 22 is closed for good now. There’s Outback Steakhouse. Like Pinnacle Peak, they’re not open for lunch; so I’ve never been to one. I’m not at all sure though, that I want a steak tonight. Market Broiler over at the mall made good crab alfredo, and I saw that it’s still on their menu. Do I really want to spend $18 plus blahblahblahblah on it though? I know! Wienerschnitzel Chili Cheese dogs! Oh, wait. Had those for lunch. There’s a Peruvian place on Chapman that has good reviews. It also has bad reviews. I love Vietnamese food, and Little Saigon is right here. Just not sure I want any right now, though.
I don’t know. It’s 7:30 already, and sleep sounds good for dinner. I’ll have more coffee while I think on it.
Drive WAY the fuck over to the coast and eat some fish.
I’m a little done with driving right now. I could just go to Popeyes. It’s inconvenient enough where I live that it may as well not be there. There’s one around the corner from the hotel. Or Winchell’s. Can’t get Winchell’s doughnuts in Washington. Doughnuts for dinner?
Aspara nikumaki? I think the place is still there (I didn’t go down to that end of the mall today.) Nah, I can make that at home. Wedge salad? That sounds good. Parking is sure a PITA though.
Wahoo’s Fish Tacos? Is there one near you?
I love fish tacos. Don’t want to go all the way to the Orange Circle for them though.
I ordered Thai food. Dedcow onna stick (for some reason nobody has beef satay at home) and pad see ew with chicken, and a Thai iced tea. Should be here in half an hour or so.
If you’re in Orange County, there’s an Outback Steakhouse up the street from Knott’s Berry Farm, and another one down the street from Disneyland. They’re both open for lunch.
Never been to Outback. They weren’t open for lunch when I worked here. (There’s a Joe’s Crab Shack next to the one I know, so we ate lunch there.) I’m still a little miffed they tore down Belisle’s. That was a great place for morning-after-the-party breakfast.
So much food, so little time. Breakfast at the hotel, lunch from Popeyes in my hotel room, and you should have seen the spread at the birthday party. (An aunt turned 90.) It was so hot here (me, having acclimatised to northern Washington) so I was chugging a Super Big Gulp of iced tea – which I refilled from the tea dispenser at the party. Not enough room for anything but an Angus beef cheeseburger and, later, a slice of cherry pie. The brats and the potato salad looked good, didn’t see the chicken burgers. By the time I got that last slice of pie, all of the large variety of desserts were gong, except for a fruit-and-whipped cream cake thing that was only half-gone.
Happy birthday to your Auntie!
We just got back from celebrating kaylasmom’s birthday (which she shares with Disneyland). Spent the day in the parks, and the night at the Grand Californian Hotel.
Thank Og kayla is a cast member. That discount came in VERY handy.
Outback is awful these days. Beef is so expensive and they are so limited by their pricing model that the cuts are all paper-thin. The porterhouse still fills the plate but can practically be rolled up into a hot dog. All of which would be fine, except that most of these cuts don’t cook well when cut so thin. So there seems to be some mickey-mouse cooking or prep going on to make them come out as if they were cooked thicker, and the result is sort of fluffy, soft meat like a salisbury steak.
We’ve put it on the permanent pass list, unfortunately. They used to be a reasonably priced cow house with good food for the money.
