Everyone - I just finished reading Anna Quindlen’s “One True Thing” - if you’ve seen the movie, is it worth renting?
(The reason I ask is because we’d have to borrow a DVD player from someone making this much more of a hassle than just running to the rental place - if it isn’t worth it, I’m don’t want to go to the trouble.)
A good movie. Somewhat depressing, but if you read the book you know where it goes. Features a young Renee Zellweger holding her own against the likes of Meryl Streep and William Hurt. Worth seeing, but I wouldn’t call it can’t miss, especially if you have to go to a lot of trouble with equipment. If you’ve got cable, it probably shows up once in a while on one of the movie channels–wait for that instead of hooking up a DVD player. (Or your local library might still have a copy on VHS, if you’ve still got your VCR in working order; the movie came out long enough ago that they’d probably have a tape instead of a disc.)
It was made much, much better than it needed to be through the talent of director Carl Franklin, who also did One False Move and Devil in a Blue Dress. He’s one of a small handful of black directors working in mainstream Hollywood, and my theory is that he did this movie to show TPB that he shouldn’t be limited to doing black projects. I mean, can you think of a whiter movie than William Hurt as a lit professor and Meryl Streep as a stay at home, Martha Stewart mom? Franklin is one of my favorite current directors, and this movie is one of the reasons why.
