This is the first thread of mine (that I remember) that has got a decent number of replies. I should get annoyed with crap 3d art more often!
p.s. All the links that people have provided have been good. There is some good stuff out there (although not as fantastic as I am trying to believe computer art can be. I guess it’s just wishful thinking). I am sorry if I offended any 3d artists. I was just ranting about my experience with one link site. I guess they only wanted to link to all the bad sites.
p.p.s Can anyone explain why at work, where they’ve got super-duper megga bellsandwhistles internet connection (it’s an internet company afterall) that can download the whole internet in 3 seconds the sdmb is as reliable as paper ladders whereas at home, where I’ve got a pezzy 28.8 k piece of brown plastic connecting my computer to the internet, the sdmb is faultless!?
I spent last night exploring the Flepotronic Art of Jan Ternald, which I enjoyed very much. I like the intensity of color and details, but of course, YMMV (being art and all).
I liked this rat art too, although someone else apparently didn’t. There is a lot on this site that I don’t care for, but I’m willing to see what’s out there. You never know what you’ll find riveting until you look. Now I’m going to check out some of these links in this thread.
(yosemitebabe, your Gorman painting is terrific. And Guinastasia, a nice surprise to see not only my favorite Barbie dress but also one of my own [Kalamazoo]:). Haven’t thought of that dress in years and I loved it.)
You’re the artist. Those chumps who flame you? They’re the lowest form of critic. Critics aren’t bad; witness Francois Truffaut or our own Cervaise or the ScriptAnalyst. But you’re the creator and you’re trying to articulate something which those flamers have missed. You create it, they tag it. It’s as much of a compliment as it is an insult. After all, they took the effort to seek you out, not the reverse.
My 3D art isn’t so great. I really don’t understand my tools. And i tend not to do ‘art’ so much as, um… Actually, I don’t know what you’d call it. 3D Graphics, maybe.
Here’s a page that has some samples to show you what I mean…
I might put a couple of animations up there too, soon.
Oh I know it shouldn’t bug me, just sometimes I have to vent about all the crap that gets sent to me.
I know I’m not a bad artist, or at least, I wasn’t in the past. I have ideas, I put them into visual form, and if people want to look at them then great. If they don’t, no big deal. I don’t do it to make a living.
I just don’t like the type of people whose sole mission in life is to siht all over someting that’s important to someone else. Like after I spend 3 weeks perfecting an oil painting and someone who has never ever picked up a paintbrush or done anything creative at all feels the need to tell me ‘That waterfall looks like a turd’.
My husband used to teach a beginning 3D art/animation class. The student projects were absolute proof that you do have to be a good artist to produce good computer art. The machine may be able to do things that are technically perfect, but you can’t fake good aesthetics, can you?
I haven’t scanned too many of the online sites lately. I swear if I see one more shiny red rendered sportscar I’m going to scream.
I think the key word is online 3d art…and there may be where the problem lies…
this may occur for many reasons:
a) As a general rule, websites have to appeal to the lowest common denominator when it comes to image properties… meaning that while a lot of us have a cable or dsl connections, a lot of people don’t. And those that don’t do not want to spend 30 minutes downloading an image. If the vast majority of your clients leave your site, it defeats the purpose. While one can argue that there are websites that are mainly for those ‘in the industry’, those are few and far in between. money needs to be made somehow…
b)Image theft. one can scan traditional art and post it up. The scanned image will never replace the qualities of the original. The same can not be said of computer art. Many artists are hesistant to post up work require 100’s of hours to have it easily stolen.
c)many of the super talented artists of this media do this for a living. sometimes the last thing you want to do in your free time is more of the same! If you want to see stuff like what is found in Myst or such, you will have to buy the games to see the art.
d)other than a website showing a gallery of images or a company that produces software to create the images, there isn’t much call for the kind of art you are looking for, on web pages. The web’s real gem, at least now, is Flash.
e) I second the notion to frequent modern art museums. The SFMOMA had impressive collections. can not stress this enough.
f)go to bookstores! especially museum book stores have impressive work in them! the MOMA (NY) had a WONDERFUL collection of stuff!
There is amazing stuff out there, but you simplyhave to seek it out. As Ironic as it seems, the best place is not the web.
it’s kinda like going to one of those “BLOW OUT STARVING ART SALES THIS SATURDAY ONLY (SATURDAY…echos)” (the ones announced by the same guy who does monster truck rallies) and bemoaning the fact that good art is hard to find.
I was not refering to the image file size, picture size and compression quality. I was refering to the artistic quality of the images.
Seems silly to me. If I had the skills to produce great art I’d LOVE for as many people to ‘steal’ it as possible. It would show they appreciate it. and IF the artists don’t want people to get it free or whatever they can post low-resolution versions. and for those who are willing to pay for a higher resolution version can get it personaly. What 3d artist (who cares about his art and not money) wouldn’t want as many people to see and have his art as possible?
I don’t care for ‘normal’ art. I am interested in computer generated 3d art. I won’t find any of that at a museum. I will find it on the internet.
Then where else do I find computer generated 3d art?
b.t.w as a result of this thread I have found plenty of very good 3d art on the web. so it looks like the web is the best place to seek it out.
I am not by any means suggesting that there isn’t such art available on the net. It simply is limited and I tried to ggive reasons as to why it is limited.
