Online, for the first time...the Neville kitties!

Here they are. The one on the left is Luna, the one on the right is Katya.

We got them both from a no-kill shelter in the Bay Area, Tony LaRussa’s Animal Rescue Foundation, in September of 2004. ARF rescues animals that are on their last day at a kill shelter. We know that Luna came from a shelter in Tulare County (east of Fresno), and we’re pretty sure Katya came from Orange County.

Luna is a Siamese mix- we know this because her eyes are blue and glow red (instead of bluish green, like most cats’ eyes) when you shine light on them. We think Katya is a Russian Blue or Russian Blue mix, but of course we really have no idea what her parents might have been.

Let me be the first to say, awwww!

Your Kitty’s eyes glow red  ? Has Luna displayed any other signs of being evil? Other than is normal to being a cat of course…

Seriously, they are adorable.

They only glow when you shine a light on them. Cats have a layer of reflective material called the tapetum lucidum at the back of their eyes, to help them see better in low light. In most cats, the tapetum is pigmented, so the eyes appear to glow a sort of bluish-green color when you shine a light on them. Albino cats and cats with Siamese blue eyes don’t have that pigment (the Siamese coloration is actually a form of albinism in cats), which means their eyes glow red when you shine a light into them. I wonder if this has anything to do with the evil reputation that Siamese cats sometimes have…

Thank you! I, of course, think they are, but I’m biased because I’m their mommy.
