Online game etiquette question

I’m not a big-time gamer. No 3D aerial combat transpires at this keyboard.

But I have recently engaged part of the online community with both Hearts and Reversi and, while these games don’t begin to compare to the wilder world of war games, I suspect some etiquette issues are shared.

When I realize I’ve screwed the pooch, I still participate for another move or two to let the opponent see the fruits of their strategy, and then I resign, which acknowledges his (her) win, as opposed to just quitting. Similarly, I appreciate an opponent who will play their losing game out.

I think that just pulling the plug is rude. Does anybody else even give a shit about that anymore?

A lot of online games track ‘disconnects’ with their win/loss record. Its understandable if someone has the occasional internet problem, but if you see someone with an unusually high number of disconnects, you can probably suspect they are a sore loser

I occasionally play online backgammon and reversi myself. I almost NEVER resign from reversi, as sometimes I am able to amaze myself. When I can clearly see that there’s no way I can win at backgammon, I do offer to resign. Sometimes I even resign if I feel that my chance of winning is very slim (I’ll need 3 rolls of double sixes, and my opponent would need very bad luck). I always appreciate it when my opponent resigns if the game is clearly over.

Yeah, just disconnecting from the game is very rude.
