My niece is eight and a half years old and she always calls me and asks me to play Toontown online with her, but I think we need a new and better game to play online together. Does anybody have any ideas?

Seconded. I played it for a day, and it’s very basic, kid-oriented (stereotypically “girl-oriented,” I seem to recall) WOW-style stuff. I didn’t get into it, so it may get different, but it is a friendly, non-threatening MMO.

May take her a while to catch on, but I don’t think you could ever be too young for Settlers of Catan (Xplorers) or Carcassone(Toulouse). May have to play a couple of games yourself first so you can teach her.
Wizard 101 is a great kids MMO. Sorry, too lazy/tired/sick with the flu to link right now, but if she was into the whole Harry Potter thing she might like it.
