Good grief! I would think that a simple search on the web would bring me to an answer on this, but so far no success.
Can anyone provide a link to a site wherein one can do all sorts of queries through the English Language that go beyond what one can easily do with a dictionary?
I’m talking about things that would help with word puzzles, (not limited to crossword puzzles, BTW) and also setting up puzzle of my own.
Examples would include:
Finding all common English words ending in EL
Finding all c. E. words with T-E-N in order. A subset of these would be consecutively. A superset would be all words containing a least one instance of each of these letters.
All words limited to a subset of the alphabet. For example, all words that “avoid” the middle row of a standard typewriter. Or contain no E’s.
… Well, you get the idea.
I’ve known for years about anagram sites, but of course such are limited as re certain particular queries about words. They don’t have the general usefulness I need.
Just today I’ve found a few crossword aids, but none so far have what I’ve been looking for.
So I thought I may as well save some further probably frustrating hunting and ask…
I decided to test the Onelook site by using a riddle that said there were supposedly only three words in the English language that ended in -gry. It seems there are over a dozen words that end in -gry. That makes me very not unangry at the fool who told me that riddle
Well the answer to the riddle is ‘the’ (and it doesn’t matter how many words end in -gry).
Of Onelook’s selection:
‘aggry’ is defined as a type of African bead (foreign word?)
‘Badagry’ is a placename
‘Cogry’ is a placename
‘Gagry’ is a placename
‘iggry’ is an Egyptian colloquialism
‘igry’ is a made-up word
‘Kingry’ is a surname
‘onegry’ is defined as ‘being alone and unhappy’
‘Pingry’ is a placename
puggry’ is a turban (foreign word?)
‘QGRY’ is a missplet acronym for Quebec Gatineau Railway Incorporated
‘WGRY’ is a radio station
‘Wigry’ is the name of a lake
So the only candidates are ‘aggry’, onegry’ and ‘puggry’, and they are doubtful.
I think this shows Onelook posts unchecked rubbish.
