Onward Christian Soldiers: Fundies taking over the military

Even a stopped clock is right twice a day. Alcoholics can be right too.

I always suggest folks attack the idea rather than the person.

Others may disagree.

I know he was an alcoholic and drug user, but why would that disqualify his writings or ideas? Even if he were a communist (left leaning I’m sure, communist, not so sure), one should still argue his ideas, not the person.

Of course, It’s Liberal de la Mancha, so it’s par for the course. Honest debate is only interesting when it further his own ideas.

Gonzomax cited Mailer as the authority behind his assertion. It is proper in such cases to attack the authority. If Gonzomax wishes to make an argument of his own, we may proceed from there.

Better now? Or would you like to call gonzomax names, too?

Daniel

Norman Mailer was also a soldier and a veteran of WWII.

No better than any other cultural generalization, which I’m surprised to find you defending. If Southerners made such good soldiers, why did they lose the Civil War?

The North had more men and more money.

Which isn’t to say that the Dixie superiority of character is anything more than a Maggie Mitchell mythology. The south had faint-hearts and turn-coats just like every army.

No, no it’s not.

Are you trying to make this yet another thread about Liberal, by dumping non sequiturs, i.e. trolling.

Yes, it is.

No, but apparently you are by posting for no purpose other than mentioning my name.

I know it’s a futile hope, but maybe, someday, TPTB will recognize your obsessive posting* for what it is, i.e. trolling.

How much would it cost to make you go away?

*An average of 340 posts a day.

Regarding argument from authority, it isn’t necessarily a fallacy for every inductive argument. (Cite.) One may attack such an argument by questioning whether the authority is qualifed.

And the fiend has even used his super powers to magically change his post count back down to 34k, for an average of 11ppd, just to make you look like an idiot.

IS THERE NO STOPPING HIM???!!!???

$10 — or using your math, $438,922.08.

I think you mean 34 k of g in an fpd, no?

Is that one of those ditloids or whatever they’re called? Or do I have it confused with the breath mints?

Chaplain: Yes sir, if it doesn’t include the time necessary to excuse the atheists and admit the enlisted men.
Colonel Cathcart: What atheists? There are no atheists in my outfit. Atheism is against the law, isn’t it?
Chaplain: No, sir.
Colonel Cathcart: Then it’s un-American, isn’t it?

As of yesterday, when my son got some new dog tags, they still won’t put ‘athiest’ on your tags. They still use ‘no religious preference,’ just like they did back in my day.

My son is active duty (obviously) and has experience with both the Navy and the Marine Corps. He is in the Navy (a Hospital Corpsman), but attached to a unit of Marines as a field medic. He was just home on leave (he will be leaving for Iraq on the 20th) and we spoke about this very issue. He is an open atheist and has been in the service for a little over 3 years. His commands have included Basic Training; 2 different schools (Hospital Corpsman school; plus the field medic school); service at 3 different clinics/ or units; and one deployment onboard a ship. He had a different immediate chain of command at all of these, and was an open atheist at all of them.

He has never suffered any official discrimination or condemnation. He occasionally runs into an individual who tries to convert him (we all run into this, I suppose). And, he very occasionally runs into someone who questions his ability to be both a ‘good American’ and an atheist. He usually points out to these individuals that the Constitution which they are all sworn to support and defend protects his right not to believe in a god or gods.

Also, Nick has known a lot of open atheists & agnostics in his brief period in the service – 10 or 12, he figures. This is far more than I knew during my 6 years active duty back in the Dark Ages. I was usually the only open atheist I knew. My husband, in 26 years active duty (he retired 6 years ago), only knew a handful of open atheists.

So maybe these conflicts are a result of a good thing – atheists and agnostics feeling more comfortable coming out of the closet and some Christians attempting to defend what they perceive as an assault on their majority.

And numerous people on this thread, in the military fight now, including myself have stated that this is not wide spread. The military has always has conservative religious people making ups its ranks. And I have always found them to be in the live and let live category. The military isn’t made up of a bunch of wallflowers. We are more than capable of telling people to screw off when they are forcing something on us that is out of line. And if this was happening on any type of significant scale, that is exactly what would happen. I haven’t seen this, not heard about it from fellow Officers. This is much ado about nothing.

Jess, not to hijack, but as a Naval Officer who has spent the majority of my time on ships and in the field, no community is more valued and respected in the Navy Marine Corps team than Corpsman. They do incredible work, are uniformly cool when the stuff in hitting the fan, and there isn’t a one man out in the field who isn’t checking to make sure the Corpsman made the flight or cruise. You should be very proud of your son.
