I’m going to Norway and i’m sooooo excited. Going over new year, never seen real snow before just the sad excuse for slush we get in North East England…
So anyone from Norway or been before?
I have friends there but would like to know any fun things to do, please dont spoil it by mentioning the scary beer prices!!!
Nup not from Norway, nor have I ever been there before… (so why on earth am I posting in here?)!
Just want to wish you a fantastic time on your travels and hope you experience “real” snow… something that I have only done once in my entire lifetime, which was during a freak sub-zero winter.
Yes it was! We do get snow here in Australia - but not in the State where I live. The snow tends to fall more in the Eastern States which is quite a distance from where I am. I live in South Australia, which is generally known as the driest State in the driest Continent in the World (believe it or not, but that’s the truth!) Anyway about 6 years ago, we did encounter a really cold winter and we actually had snow (first time in over 50 years for this area)… It was just such a magical thing to see when most of the time we’re praying for cool weather and rain! I even got to make a snowball.
Yeah, yeah I know… all you folk that get snow every winter and you curse it, but for me it WAS absolutely amazing… probably something I’ll not see again here!
LeftHandofDorkness and I spent our honeymoon in Norway. All of it was great, but the highlight was hiking in and around Rondane National Park. One of my favorite things about Norway was how easy it was to get out into nature, even in cities like Oslo and Bergen. Tapioca, I was so excited about the Leprosy Museum–hey, I like wierd museums, okay?–but when it was closed when we were in Bergen. I’m still bitter.
Norway was the highlight of my time spent mucking around northern Europe. I especially liked western Norway. I managed to catch Bergen on its sunny day of the year - but had an equally good time during the rest of the days. I did a few day hikes around Bergen and spent a day going on the Flam railway / fjord ‘tour’. I’m a real sucker for awesome feats of civil engineering … so the Flam railway was a must. But it’s absolutely beautiful scenery even if you’re not fascinated by steep twisting old railways. Flam Railway
I wasn’t in Oslo for very long - the sculpture garden is the only thing that I really saw. I don’t have the greatest art appreciation but did enjoy the sculpture garden.
Take sunglasses and have 'em handy all the time. The train from Bergen to Oslo was rather painful without them. Snow plus sun = unbelievably bright.
A fellow North East Englander - woot! Well, I’m a Brummie living here, so there you go…
Erm. Norway, huh? There was a great Billy Connolly joke about Norway - something about how if it was upright and fell in a SE direction, it’d land in France…;j
Absolutely pointless trivia: remote northern Norway doubled for the ice planet “Hoth” in “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back”. And those Battle of Hoth extras? Norwegian Mountain Rescue Unit (or somesuch organization) personnel.
[sigh] Those guys were really cute… maybe I should go to Norway, go hiking, and get lost!

Kakofonous is right; the Flam railway is amazing. In fact, the whole train trip from Oslo to Bergen has some of the most breathtaking scenery I’ve ever seen.
In addition to the Leprosy Museum–which I really wanted to send folks postcard from, dammit!–there is an incredible Viking Ship Museum in Oslo. They have several ships dating from 800 A.D. It’s just amazing to see the craftsmanship and detail of the ships, and there are really great exhibits on Viking life.
You won’t find too much in the way of fresh veggies, but the dairy (cheese, milk, ice cream, mmmm) is out of this world and they do great breads and cakes.
While in Oslo, you should see the Motstands Musee (Resistance Museum) at Akershus festning (Akershus Fortress). very interesting info re: WWII and their fight against the Nazis.
Also, Frognerparken (full of statues by Gustav Vigeland)
Holmenkollen (the big ski jump you see up on the hill (take the subway (T-bane) from downtown or Majorstua, the Holmenkollen line))
I lived there for a year and have visited countless times. Have fun.
Don’t have the lutefisk, man, my parents try to make me eat it every year for Christmas and it reeks and tastes bad.
If you do run out of beer money, you can try a local concoction called koschk (or something like that) which is coffee and moonshine. I had it out in the boonies, where liquor stores were close, but you never know, you might find it in the cities. It’s gross, but it works.
Oh, if you like art, check out the Edvard Munch museum (he’s the guy that did ‘Scream’, with that creeped out ghost-dude on the bridge, which you often see in poster stores now with a big phat doobie hanging out of said ghost-dude’s mouth).
Second the Viking ship museum in Oslo - breathtaking.
Also check out the Kon-Tiki museum, where Thor Heyerdahl’s crafts are on display. (Thor Heyerdahl being the ballsy fellow who crossed the Pacific on a raft(!) to prove his theory that the anciant Peruvians could have had contact with the inhabitants of the Easter Islands. Probably not a sound theory, but the man had guts.)
