Oops! I shoplifted!

I can top that…a friend of mine once ordered an Orbitrek (Orbitrack? Whatever…that huge elliptical trainer thing) from QVC or something and ended up getting two of them for some reason or other. They also told her to just keep them both so her brother got an unusually extravagant xmas gift that year!

About three weeks ago I had ordered some stuff from amazon.com, which arrived about a week later. A few days ago I got an e-mail from them apologizing for the delay and telling me that the order was being shipped on Dec 17. The UPS tracking number they gave me matched the one on the package I’d already received, so I suspect it’s just a glitch in their e-mail system. I am going to keep an eye on my credit card statement to make sur I don’t get chargd twice (unless I do actually get a second shipment.)

Mr. Furthur and I had a Venture experience, too. Back when we had just graduated from grad school, I was pregnant and we were very, very, very broke, no place of our own to live or anything, no jobs. Mr. Furthur finally got hired and needed some decent shirts, pants, etc. We headed to Venture and forked over $75 for two pairs of pants, shoes, and a few shirts – and we were major wincing because that was a decent chunk of our savings at the time. I mentioned “oh I’m glad that was on sale, I’ll check the receipt.” Nope, no sale – the checker forgot to ring up one of the ($15) shirts. We just stood there in the parking lot looking at each other, feeling like we ought to go back and pay but knowing how badly we needed the money.

We didn’t go back. I’ve always felt crappy about that.

Those things never happen to me so my honesty has never neen tested. OTOH, the opposite does happen, and quite often, it seems.

Not long ago I was paying $600 in cash and I had it in an envelope. I thought that handing the envelope to the other guy might make him feel uncomfortable to count it in front of me so I took out the money, handed it to him and said “please count it”. He did and said “there’s only $500”. Sure enough, the other bill was still in the envelope but I felt like shit because he might think I was trying to shortchange him.

Also, while shopping for groceries with a friend she took the Sunday paper and somehow, by mistake, it was not paid for and we were detained at the door and made to pay for it. Boy, was I embarrassed.
