OOTP baseball league anyone?

The manual that comes with the game is pretty poor, IMO. After poking through the game for two days, I found that there was nothing in the manual that I hadn’t already surmised, and the list of things I was hoping the manual would explicate was left untouched. And to top it all of it’s not very printable.

zev_steinhardt, did you “set all scouts to Average” in the league options? I think you did.

I made myself a team logo. How do I get it to show up?

Oh yeah: Will we be using a DH?

Is there a point to posting these questions, or should I be sticking to email?

OK, if you need help, let me know. If you can’t get it to work, feel free to send me your changes and I’ll do them for you on a short-term basis until you get everything cleared up.

Yep, I agree with you there. And since this is the first time I’m running an online league, there are all sorts of stuff I’m having to figure out on the fly too…

**

Yep. If we’re going to be looking at players on the web, it only makes sense. Why shell out money for a great scout, when I can simply look at your page and see how your players are through your (expensive) scout’s eyes.

Send it to me, I’ll put it up on the league page.

No DH, so don’t even worry about the w/DH lineups.

Either way is good. If anyone who’s familiar with the game wants to write an FAQ, I’d be more than happy to put it up.

Zev Steinhardt

Zev, just thought I’d let you know that I got the program to download…and when I say “I,” I really mean my genius brother figured it out while I stood by with a facial expression generally reserved for animals caught in car headlights.

I finally got the league and schedule thing loaded. I face a computer team first.

Then it’s all RickJay and I. All the way.

No luck filling those last two slots?

Yep. That’s one drawback of the game. No Interleague play.

I could have done it as two divisions (instead of two leagues) but then there’s no postseason (in which case, I would have just done one division then…

Not yet. They’re still open if anyone wants 'em. They are the Alaska and Houston teams at the league site. We’re scheduled to start play next Wednesday.

Zev Steinhardt

And that means that on Wednesday, 2 weeks of play will be simulated and the results subsequently be made available for download?
Also, my 3B has 3 ABs and my first SP has pitched 6 innings. And that’s… unexpected, to say the least. Can something be done?

I just signed a pitcher to the Cossacks. I’m sorry. His name was Noble Bryant. I was looking over the free agent lists with my own team selected, then looked at a different screen, and when I came back to free agents, I didn’t notice that it reverted to Saskatoon, and I signed a pitcher and then saw that I hadn’t had my own team selected.

I wish I was unable to do that.

It turned out ok. I exited the game, deleted the league files, and reloaded the game from the last download. But it occurs to me that once the game gets going hot and heavy it may not be that convenient to fix an error. zev_steinhardt, is it possible to put a password on free agent signings?

I also have a question about how it works. What if two of us have the game open at the same time and sign the same free agent, then both export to FTP? Who gets him?

Also, it looks like there’s no way to propose trades between online players inside the game, is that correct (I mean, there’s a way to do it, but not so that both players actually participate)? The wheeling and dealing would have to happen through email or something, and then get input later by one or the other of the players? Probably work better if we can submit an agreed-upon trade to the commish and have him input it, to avoid mixups.

That’s a good question. I don’t know if there is a way to do that.

I suppose I could have all FA signings and trades go through me.

I’ll have to check OOTP’s support and online message boards for that.

Zev Steinhardt

That makes for a lot of work for you, and it’s inconvenient for the players as well, if we have to wait for confirmation on every signing. In the long run might make salary negotiations awkward as well.

I had a look at the OOTP support boards yesterday or the day before and I found them mostly unhelpful. But I only spent about an hour there, so maybe I just didn’t find the right places.

OK, with regard to the trade issue, all trades will have to go through me. See thread from the OOTP message boards. So, although individual owners can ‘execute’ trades with other human teams, they won’t go through. So, both owners will have to email me with a trade (and where they want their new players assigned and their positions in the lineup).

As for free agents, you can’t just sign them. What you can do is make an offer and then when the day is “simmed” the player decides whether to accept your offer or not. Two (or more) players can choose to make offers and the player will choose which team to play on (usually $$ is the key, but not always). See this thread for a mind-numbingly dry description of how this is done.

Zev Steinhardt

zev_steinhardt, I believe the linked explanation of FA signings applies to the FA signing period between seasons, not in-season signings, which don’t get simmed in the same way. They seem to be instantaneous. I’ll take another look and verify this.

In the meantime, though, cheers for finding answers for us. I appreciate it.

BTW, are we all aware that “next Wednesday” is Christmas? Or did you mean the following Wednesday?

Actually, no, I wasn’t really aware that Wednesday was Christmas.

Since that’s the case, how about if I make it Saturday night, then? (Thursday nights are not too good for me, and Friday nights are out altogether).

Zev Steinhardt

HAHAHA

Zev, I’m a Jew, too! But I knew that Christmas is coming!

Saturday is fine by me.

WANTED:

One Center Fielder. Willing to trade if necessary.

OK, I’ve updated the league page with something a bit better looking and have even gotten us a message board so we won’t bore everyone over here to tears with our exploits.

First games will be simmed on Saturday night.

There are still two vacancies, if anyone wants 'em. (Please?)

Zev Steinhardt

Maybe we should go outside the board. Does OOTP have a ‘sign up’ sheet or something? 6 players makes a small league.

Maybe dredge through past fantasy threads around here to find potential leaguemates. Not intended as criticism, but this thread’s title isn’t what I’d call a “grabber,” especially for posters not already acquainted with OOTP. I wouldn’t have opened it myself except that I am sick and I read every thread on the board with “baseball” or “football” in the title.

Also, with regard to the “need more players” issue and how it interacts with the “off-SDMB message board” issue, I think posting wild tales of our OOTP exploits here on the SDMB will be the biggest draw we’ll have to acquire future players to use as expansion teams. Although I should say I love the setup of our bboy board and plan to make extensive use of the “Just for Fun” forum there.

Personally I’ve been racking my brains to come up with people I know IRL that might want to play and I’ve come up empty. My dad in particular laughed incredulously and asked me if I was crazy.

I’m not the most “connected” of posters but I do know that there are many SDMB posters that are very interested in baseball. I would imagine that some of them might like to join us here but haven’t seen the thread. We could brainstorm some names and email them or something. Also, JC, I know you’re active in the fantasy community – anybody you know that you could bring in for the league? I guess that amounts to about the same as finding someone through OOTP online resources, except that you’d have some idea of who they were.

Just tossin’ out some ideas.
