OOTP baseball

For those who don’t know OOTP stands for Out of the Park baseball. It’s a computer game in which you manage a professional baseball team for year after year. Trading, drafting, developing talent, negotiating contracts, running finances and stuff like that. It’s really fun and pretty adictive. I think there’s an online league around here somewhere too. But I’m only playing solitare

Anyway for people who want to brag or bitch about their teams.

I just got OOTP5 and played for about 12 hours straight. The good news: I won the World series my the first year. The bad news: I won’t be winning again it anytime soon. I was drafting for initial success more than the future, and it worked with two exceptions. Players really decline fast in 5. I drafted a four star SS and 3.5 star lf. Halfway through the year they were one stars, and not worthy of that. I had to trade all my near ready prospects to replace them with decent players, I squeeked out the world series, but had to win a wildcard playoff game to even make the playoffs.

But now the idiots are making 6.2 and 5.5 million respectively for the next 2 more years, and they won’t even accept assignment, so they are a dead weight in my roster as well as my wallet. and sure as hell nobody is going to take them in trade.
The good news is I have a 5 star CF prospect who I put in the majors halfway through the year, and he hit .320 with 26 HR and 19 stolen bases.

Another thing I’ve noticed about 5 is that the salaries for starting pitchers is much higher. Even a crappy SP wants more money than an excellent MR, so I think next year I will experiment with a 4 or maybe even a three man rotation, and let my excellent Middle Relivers eat up most of the innings.

I despise the game for solo play. there are so many holes in the game, and it is very easy to build a winning team and keep them on top for a long time.

IMO, online leagues are the only way to go, and for me, it is the only reason I but the game.

Obligitory mention of the Unofficial SDMB OOTP League.

I’ve had a decent solo league going (about 40 years), and won the World Series a few times. However, I’ve won my division all the time, just get beat in the playoffs.

The best fun is in the multiplayer leagues I’m in. It’s awesome to compete against real people and talk trade on AIM, etc.

I prefer Baseball Mogul myself. Granted, it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles that OOTP does but it suits me just fine. All those bells & whistles were giving me a headache.
