Opinions needed shed flooring

My folks built a large shed to store a mower and riding mower. They put in a floor made from unfinished large wooden boards. They want to protect the floor from oil stains. Would a water sealer be at all effective?

Trust me, if it was my shed, I’d just have the plain concrete slab and treat it like a shed stains and all. Thanks for the help.

Just this morning I sent a friend a letter detailing the floor I put in my shed a couple years back (he’s contemplating a shed.)

Unfortunately it didn’t deal with wood finishes…

However, here’s an option that I came up with on my own, and have used on a couple of projects. Buy some Elmer’s Ultra glue (polyurethane) and spread it thinly on the wood with a wide putty knife or a piece of heavy cardboard.

I buy Elmer’s because it’s cheaper and thinner than other Uglues I’ve tried.

The reason I started doing this is because most finishes aren’t recommended for fresh pressure treated wood, but Uglue is a-okay with PT.

Ultraviolet light will eventually break down the wood fibers under urethane finishes and the finish flakes off, but that wouldn’t happen in a shed. The appearance is not something you’d want on interior wood, but isn’t ugly…just don’t let it get wet (with water) before it dries, or you get foaming.)

Will it stand up to oil and grease? I think polyurethane is resistant to almost everything, but I haven’t experimented.

A water sealer would not be effective. For a wooden floor, the best thing is to put drip pans under places where oil and/or grease might…uh, you know, drip. The disposable alumininum foil roasting pans will work, especially if they put a little kitty litter in the bottom of them.

Thanks. I tried to sell them on each of these, but they’ll probably end up doing something expensive…
