You picked the single best bit of the movie. Yes, he clearly still had the chops - But most of the movie, he’s sleepwalking.
Pussy Galore was invented by Fleming. O’Toole was created for the film.
True, but “Plenty O’Toole” would be right at home with the names Fleming created for his “Bond Girls”. Heck, in Diamonds are Forever you’ve got the outrageously-named “Tiffany Case”
Elsewhere in the novels you have:
Honeychile Rider (Dr. No
“Domino” Vitale (Thunderball)
Vesper Lynd (* Casino Royale*)
Kissy Suzuki (* You Only Live Twice*)
Mary Goodnight (* The Man with the Golden Gun*)
The Man with the Golden Gun also gave us “Tiffy”, who explains that she was named after a flower, like her sisters. Her mother couldn’t think of any other flowers after she’d named her sisters, so she named her “Artificial” after Artificial Flowers, shortened to “Tiffy”. I thought this one of the most ridiculous explanations for a Bond Girl name, until I read in one of Fleming’s biographies that he really did meet a woman in Jamaica named “Tiffy” for just this reason.
“Pussy Galore” is a name that Fleming wasn’t sure he’d get past the censors even for the book. It did, of course, and even got into the pre-ratings movie. The name had the intended effect of raising a minor scandal each time, with the attendant publicity. In the years since, it’s been a ripe subject for parody. Michael Myers put “Lotta Fagina” in the Austin Powers movies. Alan Moore has a character tell Bond her name was “Plenty O’Quim” in his League of Extraordinary Gentlemen – The Black Dossier. And in the kid’s film Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore the villainess is named “Kitty Galore”
