Opinions on this 8" Dobsonian scope

RickJay in an earlier thread mentioned he bought a scope from this company. Browsing their website, I came across this:

Any opinions on this scope?

The more looking around I’ve been doing, I’m almost thinking of going a little larger. I found this 10"

http://www.khanscope.com/sky10f5.html

I’ve seen the Sky Mentor up close. I don’t think the stand is as good as the SkyWatchers - they looked flimsier. I would assume the instrument itself is pretty good tho. A 10", man, that’s good aperture. You’ll be able to see some awesome sights with that baby.

The accessories are standard, but it’s good that you’re getting two eyepeices. Buy a Telrad, too. Trust me on that one.

One more thing though; that sucker’s heavy, 58 lbs. Mine weighs closer to 40, and it’s a little tiring to lug around - not a big deal, but I’m a large man, dunno how strong you are or what your age is. The instrument will come out of the base easily. Make sure your vehicle is large enough to fit it before you carry it out to the parking lot.

Well, I can get a 10" Skywatcher for close to the same price. I’ll check into that too, maybe see if I can find a few reviews of it.

As to the other worries (the weight of it, size of vehicle) my only real concern is getting Mrs. Bernse to “approve” of it more than anything.

That’ll be the tough hurdle

I’ve looked at some reviews on the 10" Sky Mentor. They seem quite positive. I think I am going to go that route unless I hear some bad input on it.

Thanks for the input, Rickjay. I still have to try to convince Mrs. Bernse about it, but I think I’ll be able to do it.

Come on cold winter nights!
