I’ve been mixing GNC protein powder (vanilla) into orange juice. It’s an excellent combination w/regard to taste. However, I’m not thrilled with the sugar/calorie content. For those of you who use similar products, I’d like to know what juice/liquid you use that might not have all the calories.

Since this is food related (sorta) I’m going to move it to Cafe Society.
Moving thread from General Questions to Cafe Society.
Half carrot juice, other half oj, Pom and/or acai.
I mix it into fruit smoothies. I use whatever is fresh or whichever frozen is on sale. For liquid, I go about half and half almond milk and OJ.
Yesterday, I had frozen strawberries, fresh pine apples, and a banana. Quite yummy, and it sticks with me until lunch time.
I use full fat milk - totally gorgeous, or water. Depends on whether I’m trying to burn a few pounds.
Milk is an excellent source for replacing yer electrolytes.
Easy to go overboard with fruit and therefore on sugar. Not keen on fruit this way.
I mix my protein powder into skim milk, but that’s a totally different flavor and more calories than you’re looking for. If the vanilla/orange flavor is what you’re chasing, I’d suggest any of a gazillion sugar-free orange-flavored diet drinks.
Whey protein isolate, almond milk, a banana, and little bit of chocolate syrup, blended together. It’s what I usually try to make after a workout. Got it from an old trainer.
I like these. I use vanilla because it mixes well, taste wise, with vanilla protein powder. Mixed with milk they supply a lot vitamins and minerals.
As far as post-workout use of protein powder, I find that mixing vanilla protein (whey isolate) with a 20oz bottle of Gatorade is an excellent post-workout drink that gives you the quickly absorbed protein along with the carbs and electrolytes you need to recover.
*Forgot to add: The carbs in Gatorade are ideal for post-workout use as they are comprised of glucose and sucrose (which is half glucose and half fructose). As such, they need minimal breaking down by the body before entering the bloodstream, therefore allowing for quicker recovery. By contrast, the carbs in things like oj or fruit are all fructose, which must pass through the liver and be broken down into glucose before entering the bloodstream; therefore making fructose a poor choice for post-workout carbs.
Of course, this is all getting somewhat “down in the weeds”. For someone just concerned about general fitness, pretty much any carbs are good.
Sorry just realized the link was missing…
I thought protein drinks were best left to professional athletes. should your average Joe be drinking this stuff?
It’s just dietary protein in liquid form, which makes it easy to consume which makes it ideal for times such as post-workout, where you need the protein to begin recovery as soon as possible. Consider it a chicken breast pureed in a shaker. Gross image, I give you that, but harmless.
I’m more concerned with carbs than calories, but I’m fond of almond milk, hemp milk, coconut milk. They all have unsweetened varieties that are low in calories and carbs.
I mix them with my (custom blend) protein powder all the time and find it satisfying and yummy.
Milk, but I know several people who use water.
depends on the level of exeercise, imo. Do enough and muscles will crave protein until sated, you can eat a plateful of steak or fish if you want but you will satisfy what your body demands. Protein whey does that job really very well, and there is also - allegedly - a crucial window immediately after exercise when you can seriously improve the recovery process and whey also does that job very well.
But sure, it’s not for after a 5k job or a 10 lap swim.
Best protein shake I’ve come up with:
Unsweetened/unflavored almond milk, maybe 10-12 ounces
Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Double Rich Chocolate, about 40-45 grams worth
Torani Chocolate Macadamia Nut sugar free syrup, bout half an ounce
A few drops EZ-sweetz liquid splenda
4 ice cubes
Shake well in a mixer cup
Almost no sugar/calories at all outside of the protein itself, I think on the order of 50 or so calories for the almond milk, and technically the protein has calories but your body won’t burn it for energy so kind of irrelevant. Really good.
I’m using vanilla-flavored protein powder at the moment and don’t really like the taste, so I add a spoon of chocolate Ovaltine, some milk and crushed ice, and blend with a hand blender. Alternatively, I’ll skip the blender and just put it all in a shaker cup.
When I use the chocolate-flavored powder, I just go with ice and milk (1%).
Never tried it with Gatorade, but maybe I’ll give it a shot.
