I am looking for a meal replacement/protein shake, something that can be mixed with water and not taste like garbage, any thoughts? I have very little time for breakfast in the morning and would like something I can drink then, and maybe at lunch, with snacks mid-morning and mid-afternoon. I am working out to lose weight, so Boost and the like are out due to huge calories.
These shakes are too expensive to buy some on a guess.
I am not a fan of the chocolate with water flavour…suggestions?
Well, here’s something I use each morning…Pro Complex.
You won’t find it in the supermarket. It’s sold in nutrition stores. You might want to phone ahead first and see if they have it. IMHO the vanilla and strawberry are disappointing and a little like chalk but the Rocky Road(deep chocolate) fills the bill.
It ain’t cheap, so try the smallest size they have before you commit.
Note: Pro Complex is consumed by body builders and (in my case) people who’ve had bariatric surgery. A standard glass has 55 grams of protein.
Hey Doug, thanks for the response - my only concern is that I am not looking to bulk up. Although I am lifting weights I have no desire to be a major body builder, is it still a good choice?
Whoops! Do we have a nutritionist on the board?
I take Pro Complex as a protein supplement once in the morning. One glass has about 260 calories.
For body builders the recommendation seems to be 2 or 3 glasses a day.
I use Biotest’s Metabolic Drive, which is only available at their online store. It’s relatively cheap, tastes like a milkshake when you mix it with water, and is a whey/casein blend rather than pure whey (important because pure whey is digested too quickly for your body to absorb under most circumstances).
That said, if your goal is weight loss, don’t take the Slim-Fast approach. Eating a large breakfast and lunch will cut down on your appetite for the rest of the day and make the calories available when you’re actually going to use them, not just for storage while you sleep.
I am not actually trying the slim-fast approach. I am just so rushed in the morning especially I do not eat as good a breakfast as I know I need. As far as lunch I would like to be going to the gym during my lunchhour, so I need something fast and easy then too. I eat frequent healthy snacks during the work day.
Healthy Solutions offers a pretty good tasting shake (and entrees too).
you only have to mix with ice and 6 oz of water per shake. They’re also pretty good if you use two packets and a can of cola with ice. It tastes like a coke float. The entrees are pretty neat because they don’t have to be refigerated. I can toss a couple in my desk drawer and not worry about them getting stolen out of the break room fridge.
Bariatric patient here. I don’t usually like powdered protein drinks, but I have sampled Protein Delite in “Chocolate Coconut” and like it very much. You can find it at www.vitalady.com
My preferred weapon of choice is either Micellar Milk (I like the vanilla - the chocolate is OK) or AchievOne Protein Latte. The latter is really really good, but harder than heck to find. The manufacturer, Skylar Haley, has a big hit on their hands and can’t keep up with demand. I get it from www.bariatriceating.com The Micellar Milk is also available there, but I buy it locally from a body builder supply place.
Holy crap, am I reading the wrong product information? $27 for less than 2 lbs? It better taste like oral sex for that much, considering it’s just protein powder. Plus you have to wade through several pages of t-nation’s patented half-witted marketing-speak* to even get that information.
Bio-test! Now comes with the Second Coming Of Jesus Christ Almighty. It’ll get you HYOOGE, bro!
I just go here: rock bottom prices, fast service and most importantly, there’s a customer feedback system on each product description, so if a product has a reputation for tasting like ass, you’ll find out about it from the reviews. Nothing quite like ordering 10 lbs of something only to find out it tastes like duck vomit…
I go to Costco and get what ever protien powder in a bag they have. I, too, am super busy to make breakfast, so I make 2 protein shakes in the morning. Drink one at home, and take the other one to the office. The Costco protein might taste well with water (I never mix that stuff with water, only milk), but it tastes great with milk. I’m not sure how many calories you need, but this one should have about 300 (maybe 330).
1 scoop protein powder
some ice
2 bananas
2 tbsp peanut butter (preferably natural)
4 tbps (heaping) vanilla yogurt
hershey’s low fat/sugar free chocolate syrup to cut down on the taste of the yogurt), about 1 tsp
2 cups skim milk (it might be more, but I don’t think so, basically 500 ml)
Put all of it into a blender and mix for 30 secs.
Here’s a GQ (wrong forum, but I’ll ask anyway): could I conceivably eat this for the rest of my life?
Best tasting stuff ever: Labrada Lean Body meal replacement shakes (kind of pricey though)
So there are 617 calories in there, plus whatever’s in the syrup (probably not much if it’s low fat and sugar free) and protein powder (300 calories sounds about right for a scoop).
Poysyn: How little time do you have to eat in the mornings? If you like sausage patties, I can highly recommend the Morningstar Farms vegetarian ones. They only take a minute or two in the microwave for a plate of three or so, fill me up very well, and are 80 calories apiece. Best of all, you can put them on a paper plate or paper towel, so you won’t have to clean your blender.
I also recommend the AdvantEDGE carb control shakes in the little square boxes. Unlike the Slim-Fast ones which are loaded with sugar, these actually have only about 100 calories, plus more fiber, so they fill you up for longer. They are a bit pricey though.
I have about five minutes to eat whatever I can, including time to make it. I already get up as early as possible, the problem is the sometimes grumpy three and a half year old I have to get ready as well.
I get the 2 lb container of the Walmart Protein Body Fortress powder (around $ 14) then blend it with Silk soy milk. An 8 oz glass is (110 powder + 100 soy milk) is 210 calories and has tons of protein (23 powder + 9 soy milk = 32 grams) plus it’s fairly low cost. It also tastes a lot better than the canned shakes. You do have to mix it thoroughly with about 30 sec vigorous stirring so it doesn’t clump.
For whatever reason soy milk tastes better with protein powder than regular milk plus it’s lower fat.
Thanks for breaking down the calories for me. The protein scoop (22g) has 110 kcals to it. So, that’s about 414 (back of the envelope math and fast typing) kcals per shake. That’s a good amount for a meal. I wonder what would happen to my body if that’s all I ate (plus a vitamin supplement), 6x/day, and I guess add 1 scoop of metamucil?
