What's your favorite . . . protein shake?

I am looking for something fast and filling for breakfast. I am vegetarian and have a hard-boiled egg or toast and peanut butter most days. Sometimes I’ll have cottage cheese. (Why don’t they make cottage cheese in small yogurt-like containers by the way?) I thought maybe a protein drink might be a nice change of pace but I am pretty picky and I don’t want something chalky or strange. I want something delicious. I don’t mind mixing a powder with milk, but I don’t want to have to use the blender. Do you know of a product that I would like?

Or do you have any other good healthy fast vegetarian breakfast ideas?

I like Whey Gourmet. It tastes like a five dollar milkshake, and is also low carb & low fat. Unfortunately the shop didn’t have it this week so I’m using something called ‘Designer Whey’ which, while it is apparently ‘America’s No1. Protein Powder’, tastes a little bit like shit :frowning:

I drink EAS AdvantEdge Mocha Latte, Cafe Caramel, or Cappuccino shakes in the morning. Stumble out of bed and get some ready made coffee and protein!

Voila! Cottage cheese in individual servings.

Try anything made by Atkins. Or a low carb diet

I noticed the calories and protein are similar but since the Atkins, cuts the carbs and gives you the fat it tastes better

Because your mind associates the fat with a real shake. And there isn’t the chalky taste.

The downside is the Atkins or low carb protein shakes can cost 1.5 to 2 times as much.

Must…resist…urge…to make…semen joke…

I have to get 55 grams of protein a day so it starts out with a PRO-Complex two-scoop shake. I see you’re ovo, so you shouldn’t have a problem with the eggs that are used. The rest of the protein comes from whey. You can usually find this product in body building nutrition shops.

I’ve tried the vanilla (blah!) and strawberry (double-blah!) and have settled on the rocky road (double chocolate).

Note: look around for a friend who’s had bariatric surgery (it was recommended in all of our prep sessions). Have that person whip you up a PRO-Complex shake to see what you think of it. That way you won’t get saddled with a big container of it and discover on day one you’ll never drink it again.

For a more balanced breakfast, I like bran flakes with skimmed milk and a couple of heaping tablespoons of cottage cheese. Fibre, carbs, dairy, and lots of protein. Add some fruit, and you’ve got a fast, filling, and balanced breakfast (in my opinion, anyway).

Good timing, I just bought a protein shake to help with my diet and exercise program. I got this one and I really really like it. It’s sweetened with stevia, so it’s low in carbohydrates but doesn’t have any of that nasty fake sweetener taste. I usually blend it with bananas or peanut butter, but it’s pretty good just with milk (or soymilk, which I like).

I use the AchievOne protein drinks. I get mine from www.bariatriceating.com - I’m a post-GBS patient & the site is run by a “fellow traveler”. I like all the flavors, but the Vanilla Nut is my preferred weapon of choice.

The Body Fortress vanilla whey protein drink at Walmart is delicious when combined with Silk Soy milk. I scoop per 8 oz of soy milk. It’s the same exact stuff as the health food and nutrition stores carry and it’s about 50% less pricey.

Optimum Nutrition Egg Protein is decent but it’s expensive compared to the whey ones. Much better flavor IMO, though; the whey ones always taste vaguely sour to me. www.netrition.com has the best on-line prices I’ve found.

I whole heartedly agree, the egg protein is much MUCH better tasting.

I actually use a scoop of egg protein and a scoop of soy protein. My research shows that soy protein may not be as good a source of protein, but it has some other health benefits.

Personally, I’m of the opinion that you should buy the cheapest whey you can find as long as it mixes well, isn’t chalky and doesn’t give you gas. There’s nothing really magical about the more expensive brands–you’re mostly just paying for flavoring or supplements, which you’d be better off just adding yourself.

Personally, I think even the tastiest mix is going to taste like ass after you’ve been eating it for two months straight. I’d rather get something a bit on the bland side and then add flavoring myself. That way, one morning, I can blend in a banana…another day some sugar free jello mix…another morning some sugar free pudding or a couple of spoons of peanut butter…maybe some instant coffee + splenda the next…you get the idea.

I tend to order from All The Whey–mid 30 buck price range for a 5 lb tub of vanilla, pretty concentrated, mixes well, doesn’t taste that bad. I usually just down two scoops with some water and instant coffee in the morning and then get on with life.

It might not be the brand for you if you don’t have a blender, though. Most concentrated whey powders don’t seem to mix that well without one.

I’m fond of Biotest’s Metabolic Drive. It’s a whey-casein blend (meaning that it digests significantly more slowly than pure whey), it tastes great, and it’s not expensive ($25/2 lbs.).

Thanks for all of the advice!

I think I am going to try the ones mixed with coffee first and then go from there.

slortar, I believe you when you say even the tastiest mix is going to be yucky after a while. Hopefully, I can buy in smaller quantities and make my SO drink it too!
