Orange cooking?

So, my mom likes oranges. She likes oranges a lot. My dad, I think to help get himself out of some simmering water, bought my mom several shoebox-sized cases of the things, only to realize that there was no room for them in the fridge. :smack:

So, since the oranges are getting increasingly ripe every day, no matter how many of them we manage to eat, I’ve decided to make the best of this.

Give me some good recipies using oranges? Easy recipies, elaborate recipies, dinners, deserts, breakfasts, whatever, just give me some ideas here :stuck_out_tongue:

My favorite orange dish is absurdly simple. Apparently it’s a big thing in Morocco. Slice the oranges rather thinnly into rounds (slice them along the width, not the length, so the wedges make triangles, like a round stained glass window.) and sprinkle with cinnamon. That’s it! But the cinnamon brings out wonderful flavors in the orange.

This is a really good salad made with oranges, tomatoes and broccoli. In fact, there are quite a few recipes at that site you can find by searching for “orange”.

Of course, if they’re getting too ripe, you can juice them and freeze the juice.

Are you sure you have oranges and not clementines? Granted, they are a type of orange, but with thinner skins and sweeter flesh, IIRC.

I don’t have any recipes for you, though oranges go great with many kinds of fish - you could lay thinly-sliced oranges on the top of a fillet while sauteeing or broiling, and make a sauce from orange juice and butter (mm!). Cut oranges into quarters and stuff a chicken with them for roasting. I’m sure the Dopers will come through with some specifics, but if not I hear teh Internets is a good resource for recipes.

Marmalade, or some other kind of orange preserves maybe?

Well, they are Clementines, do those have different recipies?

I wonder if you could make some kind of orange jam with them? Would it gel?

Get a bag of cloves, stud an orange with the cloves and tie it with a ribbon. Noone knows why you should do it, but it is traditional. OK it’s a Victorian era airfreshner idea.

Oranges -> Orange Juice -> Orange Sorbet if you have the time and space in your fridge for the sorbet.

Thinly peel some oranges, then using a very sharp knife remove the white pith from the peel leaving pure orange coloured orange peel. Now pack the peel between paper towels and place in a warm dry place to create your own dried orange peel (that is fantastic in Chinese cooking).

Take up wine making, and make orange wine. It takes some skill and experimentation, but home mede orange wine can be very good.

As has been mentioned marmalade (though this works best with low sweetnes oranges) add whiskey in to the orange marmalade mixture for a real treat.

Slice them into rounds, throw them on top of mashed yams in an ovenproof dish, throw on a little orange juice, salt and pepper, and bake. Yum!
