Orange is the New Black is another Netflix original that is pushing the envelope on what a TV series can be. It is based on the idea of an upper-middle class woman who is sent to medium security prison for a non-violent crime she committed ten years before. It isn’t your standard prison fare although there is some of that too.
It is really a complex character driven dramedy with some of the best acting I have ever seen even among the minor characters. It is darkly humorous and often bizarre in ways that suck you in so that everything seems perfectly reasonable.
I wanted to say the created a whole new subgenre here but I realize they didn’t. Northern Exposure was very similar in many ways. They are both fish out of water stories that use their unusual settings to focus on interesting characters and make even mundane topics fascinating. If you liked Northern Exposure as much as many of us do, you will probably like Orange is the New Black as well.
