I’ve recently been playing Orcs Must Die 2 and trying to work my way up the leaderboards. Well, and also flingy burny runs.
I thought it might be fun to have a weekly competition. I’ll assign 2 or 3 maps of different types and everyone makes a few runs at setting a high score. At the end of the week, we’ll post the results. Sort of an asymmetric multiplayer.
If you’re seeing this post today, OMD2 is a daily sale on steam for another 23 hours. It’s $3.75 for the base game, but I would recommend getting the $6 complete pack which includes new maps, modes, and traps. Furthermore, I would recommend getting Orcs Must Die (1), also on sale, because if you own both games, you can play most of the OMD1 maps in the (superior) OMD2. We will occasionally do one of those OMD1 maps in OMD2 for the competition.
Make sure you add me on steam as a friend so that I can track you on the leaderboards. I’ll try to post the current scores at least 24 hours before the end of the weekly competition so that people know what they’ll need to beat. If you want to add each other too, post your steam profile link on here. It’s also a good way to meet people for co-op play, which is a lot of fun.
The only rules will be to not deliberately use any sort of exploits. I’m not really familiar with the exploits available, but I know at the top of the leaderboards there are some ridiculous scores that can’t have been earned honestly. Basically, build a real network of traps, not try to find weaknesses in the game engine.
And don’t look up on youtube what someone else with a high score did and copy them. Come up with your own strategy.
We have no way of enforcing these rules, so we can only go by the honor system.
I encourage discussion of the weekly challenges and general gameplay strategy. It’ll be fun to see people’s different approaches.
If you’re new to the game, you’ll want to play through the normal story mode for a while - you’ll need to unlock skulls to purchase weapon and trap upgrades. There is a skull refund button on the main menu, so if you don’t have that many skulls, you can figure out what traps and weapons you want to use for a particular challenge, refund all your skulls, and then upgrade those particular ones for the challenge.
You can participate in any or all of the competitions. I’ll try to get a feel for what people want, but we’ll probably have 2-3 maps in different modes. Probably one normal story mode map, one endless mode, and then maybe something different like a co-op challenge.
I wanted to get this OP out now to give people advanced notice to buy the games when they’re on sale, but I haven’t thought much about the first week’s competition maps. I’ll post those later today.
Post if you’re interested, any maps/modes you think would be good, and if you have any ideas for rules or other aspects of the competition.
