Order of the Stick - Book 6 Discussion Thread

There’s no evidence that Belkar has Giants as a Favoured Enemy. But he does get 8 attacks per round, 4 with +12 (+2 Str, +5 weapon, +5 Collision) or more damage (average 14.5), and 4 attacks with +6 (+2 Str, +4 weapon) or more damage (average 8.5). So if all 8 attacks hit, he does an average of 92 HP damage, or 100 damage if his Str is 16 or 17. More if he uses his Barbarian Rage. Since he can’t use Power Attack with light weapons, he’s attacking at full BAB too.

What’s BAB?

And does that calculation include his new weapon?

“Belkar, that’s the wrong kind of bird! That one can’t fly!”

Hee.

Base Attack Bonus. For Barbarians, for instance, see the second column of the top table at http://www.d20srd.org/srd/classes/barbarian.htm.

Dunno about the dagger enchantments though.

“Mustelid evacuation habits.” Heh.

BAB is one of the main things that contributes to how good you are at hitting things (vs. missing them), and is the main way that your chance to hit increases with level. Barbarians, like fighters, rangers, and paladins, have the fastest progression of BAB with level. If you have the Power Attack feat (a very popular choice for those sorts, both because of its own benefits and because it’s a prerequisite for a number of other useful feats), you have the option of sacrificing some of your chance to hit for a corresponding increase in your damage if you do hit. But it doesn’t work for light weapons like daggers (and works especially well for two-handed weapons like Roy’s greatsword), so Belkar won’t be using it.

I’ve just assumed he has Whatever Happens To Be Nearby as a Favored Enemy.

Gotta wonder if this is where the Oracle’s prophecy manifests as Belkar’s final destination. :frowning:

Roy also needs all the help he can get at this point. Right now would be the least convenient time for him to die. Dude loves killing vampires.

People always say this whenever Belkar is in the slightest danger. But no. There is the other prophecy that says he will save Hinjo’s life twice, and he’s only done it once so far. He can’t die until that is fulfilled.

That prophecy is going to be subverted somehow. The easiest way would be for Belkar to don the Girdle of Masculinity / Femininity; I’m sure there are other ways.

Not quite. He could die saving him.

(If I can be nitpicky anywhere, I assume it’s here.)

Is that from one of the print books? I don’t remember seeing that one.

Yes, it’s a bonus strip from “War and XPs”. I’ve never seen it myself but its existence provides good evidence of Belkar’s plot armour until it’s fulfilled.

It’s a bonus strip in War & XP’s, I think. A foretelling by Saangwaan, the blind seer.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: The twist in the Belkar prophecies is going to be that there’s no twist. He’s going to die, on schedule, go to whatever afterlife is appropriate, and never get raised, resurrected, reanimated, or in any other way brought back. I don’t know how Burlew could possibly have made this any clearer. But by now, so many people are expecting a twist of some sort that they’ll still be surprised anyway when he plays it straight.

And you know what? I think most people will be delighted in the story, whichever way it turns out.

And I won’t mind that outcome a bit…

…so long as it is the final strips of the story.

Agree with Chronos, but I’ll add that I expect it to be during a real fight when Belkar’s sacrifice/death matters. Either during the fight for the final Gate or perhaps in the course of stopping Durkon – and actually stopping him, not getting tossed out a window one round in. But it won’t be against frost giants on the way to the real fight.

So I expect his death to be absolute but also significant. Which means probably in the ending chapters of the story.

I would love a glimpse of Belkar’s afterlife.
