Order of the Stick - Book 6 Discussion Thread

I don’t think he’s referencing e.e. cummings, but it may be the dwarven equivalent of
i carry your heart with me(i carry it in my heart), one of my favorite sonnets.

I went to Stephen King:

“I do not kill with my gun; he who kills with his gun has forgotten the face of his father.
I kill with my heart.”

But where is he? No doubt a good place since the other cleric is there as well.

The other Dwarven cleric of THOR…

Antechamber of Valhalla would be my guess. Well, ante-cloud, I suppose. Similar to the place Roy was when he first died. Most of the vampirized dwarves, now liberated during the fight, should be somewhere nearby.

You mean Ysgard. I’m not sure that’s where he is - Thor may be CG, but Durkon is LG through and through. My bet is that he’s in the same place Roy went, the foothills of Mount Celestia.

The fact that he and Minrah were clerics of Thor should override any difference in alignment with their god. Assuming there are any such; OotSverse does not necessarily follow all the stuff written in the D&D books. For all we know, Thor may be LG here. At any rate, being loyal and faithful agents of their god, they should end up with that god in the Afterlife. Perhaps many of the vampirized dwarves went elsewhere, but Brother Sandstone should be around, at the very least. Although he may have already been admitted, since he was released from his vampire some time earlier.

That’s actually been bothering me for years - why is an obviously LG cleric worshipping a CG diety? He should be a cleric of Tyr or Heimdall instead.

Maybe we’ll get an answer now.

I hope “I carry my fists in my heart” becomes a new T-shirt quote.

An absolutely delightful update.

Why did Roy’s brother wind up in the Celestial Realms when all toddlers are innately chaotic? :stuck_out_tongue:

Chaotic Evil, at that.

Myself, I went to Discworld and the “iron in the heart” that Jason Ogg uses to fight against the Fey.

Though the Giant (given his self-applied name) was probably thinking of Ambassador G’Kar, who carries a sword in his heart.

Yeah, well the last thing Durkon carried in his heart was a stake.

It’s nice to wonder how the gods and the afterlife work for everyone else, but we know how they work for dwarves. If you die honorably, you go to Thor. If you die dishonorably, you go to Hel. And, maybe, if you find a loophole, you can go to Loki. Alignment does not appear to be relevant.

So Durkon should be in or just outside Thor’s domain at this point. I believe that’s called Valhalla in this universe.

In other words, “What does God need with an alignment restriction ?”

If you try to raise a dead soul, and the soul chooses to stay dead, I assume you still used up the diamonds?

I wonder if Durkon will try to get Thor to take an interest in the fate of the world.

Looks like it did in these two strips: 844 Case In Point - Giant in the Playground Games and 845 The Last Laugh - Giant in the Playground Games

There, the Order tried to Resurrect one of the Draketooth clan when they were in the Pyramid towards the end of the last book. The soul didn’t want to come back—probably because Durkon was the same alignment as a paladin, like if one of Soon’s men was trying to do it—the Resurrection failed, and the Order lost the diamond dust.

Yup, just like if you Fireball someone, and they’re immune to fire, you still use up the bat guano. Except that you probably care more about the diamonds.

But Durkon would likely agree to a rez. The world still needs saving, and now he knows that he has a son who needs raising, too.

Not that I think Durkon would do this, but could a Dwarf’s refusal to let herself be resurrected be a sufficiently dishonorable act to get them kicked out of Valhalla? Or does the inquiry into the worthiness of the soul cease after the question of, “Did they die with honor?”, has been answered?

I think it’s very likely that Durkon would consent to return; the question as I’ve always seen it was, “Who’s going to do it?” Moreover, is there anything that Hilgya could quickly do to Durkon’s dust, such that they’d need True Rez to bring him back?
