In SoD Redcloak says “He became a god – in a pantheon of one.” That’s within the Crayon pages (page 40), so take it with however many grains of salt you want. But so far it seems the Crayon pages (both there and the main strip) are generally correct, but leave out important details (such as the one just revealed in 1139).
That could suggest that the goblinoid pantheon is one deity even if it’s under a larger umbrella. The elvish pantheon has a number of deities and is considered its own pantheon despite being a subset of the Western pantheon (Veldrina refers to them as “the combined Western and elven pantheons”).
Obviously it’s all just guessing. We don’t even know if there’s deities for the other sentient humanoid races such as orcs or how those are handled. Could be that there’s dozens of freelance deities and the Dark One is indeed outside the system but hardly alone in it.
Where in all these pantheons and emergent powers do our fiends down below fit in?
In a pantheon of two (or possibly even three). But as a wise man once said “Cannae ye see tha thar just puppets?!?”
That doesn’t jive very well with the Crayon pages of SoD. The Dark One was first assassinated during a parley with kings of other races while he was mortal and then, when he first ascended, the other gods mostly wanted to kill him again. Now admittedly, that was a very one-sided view of the Dark One’s relationship with others, and I’m sure we’d get a very different story if we got their views. But still it shows the Dark One is, in his own view, an outcast from the other gods. If he were accepted as a member of one of the pantheons, I don’t think we’d get the same view.
I wonder if Banjo will reappear.
Don’t forget that the Puppet Pantheon also includes Banjulhu.
Nope, still not updated.
At least we’re talking about the strip again.
The callbacks are killing me.
Wow, so the fundamental nature of the world changes each rebuild. That’s puts some of the weirder MITD possibilities a bit higher probability I guess.
Do you think he actually planned this back at #301?
If so, longest brick joke ever.
Gah! You said “weirder MITD possibilities” and made me think of The Winslow. It can’t possibly be The Winslow.
8-Bit Theater would have it beat in pure strips (1,216 to resolution vs 839 strips) and that was obviously planned. If this one was planned (which I’m skeptical of), it took longer in real life time but that’s just a question of artist output.
8-Bit Strip #107 & Strip #1221
“Laser Snail.” LOL Where does he come up with this stuff? I wish Burlew would get to the point though.
We at least know that this world, out of all of the possible ones, is uniquely special and may have the key to finally defeating the Snarl. And it sort of fits: this world, out of all of the made up RPG worlds that have entertained us, in tabletop sessions around the world, on monitor screens, in books, was the only one so far to have something like a Kickstarter to bring it to more people. (Does that mean that Pillars of Eternity is one of the worlds in the rift? Add any other Kickstarter properties that might qualify) And it’s the one that we’re reading about in the OOTS comic.
What was the spell that Durkon was asking for that gave Elan a colon tumor?
Yeah, the movie snacks world and the colon tumor both made me laugh out loud.
Reading the last panel in context, especially with “almost” in quote marks, I think Thor just admitted to giving Elan cancer.
Rather the opposite of the “happy ending, for you at least” that the Oracle promised…
Thanks, Inner Stickler! I was sure it was a pun for some other mis-cast spell that Thor granted, and didn’t look back far enough to see that it actually was what Durkon said.
I did remember the movie snacks fight without prompting though, and it was nice to see that the Milk Dud[e]s were avenged. I like Popcorn and the rest’s chances over Soy Latte.
So, this is building to some sort of reveal or point; the “once in eternity opportunity to change things.” What do we think that’s going to be?
