Order of the Stick - Book 6 Discussion Thread

Hah!

Roy could become Cronus because, hey, he’s already got a trouser titan…

And from that link, the penny dropped for me: golem = Gollum. Ha!

Very neat wrap-up of the Crystal/Bozzak/Thieves Guild subplot, showing how much Haley has developed as a character to boot.

I think that is referring to her needing money to bail out her father.

There’s some other secret that involve somebody named Kyran and Rachel.

No, that’s a different secret. Her confessions to Elan at the restaurant (when she was trying to break her language block) translate as:

Later she says she’s “Chaotic Good! Ish!” so I’m thinking that last secret is about her alignment.

I’m guessing Kyran and Rachel were earlier romantic partners.

I don’t think so. The strip carefully avoids telling what the secret is, but the readers already knew about her father. Since it’s not a secret (to the readers) the strip wouldn’t have avoided saying it.

Also, Q&A thread with some actual A on OOTS forums.

Why would she hide her alignment from V? V didn’t care about that kind of stuff at the time.

To quote the current strip:

Which was a trait that her father fostered in her. I remember the occasional “youth” strip for Haley and Ian Starshine was a freaking paranoiac and made sure to raise her the same way.

I don’t think that’s a secret, I think that’s just two of her pre-Elan relationships that didn’t work out.

New Strip: 982

Since Vamp Durkon hasn’t returned to dwarven lands, we can be pretty sure this resurrection won’t happen. But what twist will keep it from happening. Seems like Roy has everything he needs, and the temple doesn’t seem inclined to drive them away at this point.

But they haven’t said they could do it (and they’re not aware they’re dealing with a vampire). All they’ve done is call for the head cleric. We’ve already seen that the first temple Roy and “Durkon” went to wasn’t up to handling the job.

Most likely, the head cleric will arrive and also be unable to resurrect Durkon. The point of this visit will be some other element of the story.

Hmm, I wonder if Durkon wants to fake a resurrection? That seems farfetched.

I think Durkpire is shopping for a high level cleric, one high level enough to do a resurrection. For reasons unexplained. My original notion upthread was Durk would vamp said cleric, but others in the thread were unconvinced. Shrug.

I don’t think that’s it. Durkon says that shopping between temples is a way to get to someplace Hel needs him to be (Roy acting as bodyguard on the trip). Since we don’t know where or what that is, it’s difficult to speculate on how shopping for a rez, or a high level cleric helps exactly.

Maybe the high cleric of Hoder is really an undercover Hel agent that will send them someplace in search for some McGuffin that would supposedly allow the rez ? Maybe Hel needs Durktat to infiltrate the inner sanctum of this or that gnome temple for unspecified reasons ? Maybe the point of Roy tagging along isn’t physical safety, but more vouching for Durkula (in Roy’s capacity as an established LG actor) which would let the Dorfpire pass through putative gates or wards.

My thought is that if a Resurrection is cast, then it will be the HPOH that is resurrected and not Durkon.

I’m not sure everyone understands a critical part of resurrecting Durkon. Durkula (the vampire) must first be destroyed. There’s several ways to do that, but if he doesn’t really want the resurrection (and I’m certain he doesn’t), Durkula will resist vigorously. And resurrecting the HPoH makes no sense at all.

As for what Durkula is looking for by visiting the temples, there’s a hint in the foreshadowing in strip 968. That foreshadowing could also apply to Roy.

BTW, note that Durkula’s usual tactic for avoiding unpleasantness (dominating the person responsible) won’t work at the Shrine of Hoder. The blindfolds the priests are wearing preclude that.
