Order of the Stick book 7 discussion thread

Disagree.

My way to retcon Thor’s Might is that it’s a 1/day power available from the Hammer. Ideally, Burlew should’ve drawn Minrah as wearing the Gauntlets too, so as to fully synergize the Hammer’s powers.

Otherwise…a 9th level Cleric (needed to cast 5th level spells), and toting along some Fighter levels too, is incongruous with how Minrah had previously been described and how she interacted early after meeting the Order. And she lost a level by dying, so she’d have been even tougher when the Order first met her.

Sure was a cool looking last set of panels though.

GAAH! That’ll teach me not to read the description and just look at the chart. I don’t know why it would have been so tough to add that to the formula on the chart!

Ugh, Triple nitpick: It only adds the spell level to the DC if the Concentration attempt is while casting. I’m not sure if we ever decided how many attempts to Implode Durkon Redcloak got before Minrah attacked.

Thanks for the discussion!

Looking at the final two panels… did Minrah do a Wind Walk comet-orbit from above (during “miiiiiiii”), then shrugged off the WW and emerged at large size? Is that what we’re looking at?

Zero. You only get one attempt per person, and it either succeeds or it fails: “You can target a particular creature only once with each casting of the spell.” He was apparently still midway through casting the spell when he got attacked, and the spell fizzled.

I think it was just to indicate that Minrah was embiggened by the Thor’s Might and thus shouting from over Redcloak’s head.

Of course, this ruckus is sure to bring Xykon out from his nap or pulling the wings off pixies or whatever he does with his time.

Yeah, LHOD, here’s where I’m going to have to disagree. However, I will agree there is all sorts of artistic license happening. And I don’t now how much I care so much as I like this type of discussion.

Ugh. I can’t find it but from 1209, Redcloak seems to successfully cast it. If it’s interrupted, I think Burlew has the spell name that is spoken when casting stopping at some point if it’s interrupted. I don’t see that in this. Then, in 12010, it seems as if Redcloak targets him again with the drawings and then the later snap effect that is drawn.

It’s a small thing but I do think Redcloak gets it cast before Minrah can stop the casting.

V fizzles several spells when they first fight Miko and they’re fully “said”. I’m not about to look for every instance of a fizzled spell though.

LOL, I went looking for an example of that and couldn’t find it. Again, is that a fizzle on casting? Or concentrating on it? Again, small quibble because I enjoy the comic but also discussions like this.

Having said that, as a DM, I try for consistency and learn toward the fun as much as I can.

I assume a fizzle on casting but then I also assume that Redcloak’s casting/talking were all in one turn and were interrupted by Minrah on the same (Redcloak’s) turn. Rather than Redcloak’s post-casting concentration being interrupted.

Yes, this means that Durkon technically shouldn’t have been affected at all but artisitic license, raising the stakes, leaving the previous strip on a cliffhanger, yadda yadda.

That’s what I’d been thinking since the strip came out, but that “miiiiii” panel is very reminiscent of the Wind Walk art just 7 strips ago. I think Minrah is inside that descending cloud; note where the speech balloon originates.

I took it as her on the way down, jumping from on high while shouting.

I think that’s how Minrah could be so close at hand, and why Durkon wanted to stay outdoors. Minrah was floating just out of frame as a cloud during the whole conversation using WW.

Thor’s Might is a lot more impressive in the new art style, is all

I have a theory about Minrah - but it’s crazy, even for me.

Minrah is Hera, confirmed!

Actually, she’s Serini.

I know: how could a mid/low-level dwarf cleric actually be a high-level halfling rogue? I’m not sure… but she sure does talk about changing and reinventing herself a lot, doesn’t she? And a rogue would be good at running this kind of long con.

Would this be the secret she had to whisper to Thor? (I haven’t bought Utterly Dwarfed; does Burlew explain that bit in the commentary?)

That’s my guess.

I think she actually became a cleric of Thor, in honor of her late friend Kraagor, which is why she went to Valhalla when she died. Thor knew what she really used to be, of course, but he’s willing to accept her new name and identity, becase he’s cool like that.

Remind me who Serini is? And also, how could she disguise her race like that?
