The idea that they start out as small components and evolve into large building-sized parasitic forms is straight out of Terry Pratchett - there’s a similar entity in Reaper Man that starts out as a snowglobe and eventually becomes a shopping mall. But I like the coin concept.
Not the way they’re usually depicted in D&D, but repeating crossbows are totally realistic.
Neat. Though, yeah, not “Halfling with a machine gun” style.
Burlew’s having fun with us. He knew we’d be discussing the Beholder trademark issues so he threw in the whatchamacallit line. (Surprised to see my spell check accepts whatchamacallit.) And many of us have been waiting for Bloodfeast’s big reveal since 2017.
Clever.
Elan.
Being clever.
Elan.
But it was clever. And it was Elan. Elan was being clever. Clever…Elan? Clever Elan. Clever Elan. Clever Elan.
Nope, still not going in.
On the other hand, it feels so much like the sort of thing a bard would try. I can practically feel the out-of-universe dice rolling. If it were 5e, Elan would even likely get Advantage. Even the part where Belkar tried to get Bloodfeast, but failed because his modifier was too low, so he didn’t get him out in time.
Don’t think of it as Elan being clever. Think of it as Elan persuading someone to do something stupid. That’s perfectly in character for him.
And of course Belkar didn’t catch on in time for use to get the Bloodfeast splash panel.
Narratively, I doubt we get our Bloodfeast splash panel this encounter. Everyone involved is a nominal good guy who doesn’t want to see Xykon or Redcloak win so it’s not as though Bloodfeast is going to eat Sunny or Sunny is going to disintegrate Bloodfeast and THEN you’re just going to have to make Bloodfeast small again to get out of the single chamber with the small door, etc. It just doesn’t work.
But, I dunno, prove me wrong Burlew. Prove. Me. Wrong.
Edit: “Sunny”. Orb. Rays. Haha, I get jokes. Lemme head over to the “shit you just got now” thread…
…
Me too, apparently…
That’s interesting. I am often the last person to notice a pun or other verbal joke. But i saw a big orange sphere hanging in the air, and assumed it was named “sunny” because it looks like the sun. I didn’t even think it was a joke. Just a sort of boring descriptive name.
And the mimic is named “Mimi”. Serini apparently isn’t very creative when it comes to naming.
I initially just figured the joke was “Haha, look we named the scary iconic monster something silly and nonthreatening…”
Though it’s more than just “Round like sun”; Beholders shoot rays.
Round like the sun, floats in the “sky” like the sun, and orange like the sun.
I didn’t catch the “shoots rays”, but sure, that fits, too.
But. not being super into D&D, I saw it and immediately thought it looked like a little sun, so calling it “Sunny” just made sense.
Yeah, me too. To the extent there was a descriptive joke, I thought it was a reference to its cheerful disposition.
Also I thought it was established the colored speeach bubbles were thoughts, so I missed that Sunny had revealed his name out loud two comics ago. I guess the color was just to tell us who was who when the lights were off.
Love Belkar’s terrible pun at the end.
No, colored speech bubbles represent, uh, “distinctive speech patterns”.
