If V knew in 2008 how often it would come up by 2021, they would have just rewrote the probability tables
Edit: I’ll mention again that I get why it happens and it doesn’t really detract from my enjoyment. More just between-strip nerd chatter and gentle mockery, much as I’d point out the wildly varying levels of acidity in xenomorph blood in Aliens while still enjoying the movie just fine.
Couple questions that occured ot me on rereading the latest strip.
Why did V’s Fly Spell get Dispelled? It does not look like Sunny aimed his big eye at him/her, since the Light Spell is still active. I would not expect the sleeping potion to Dispel it. I figure he/she should be floating around at the last altitude he/she was at. At the very least, he/she should have dropped at a slower rate rather than crashing to the floor.
As far as Elan, is there any reason Haley can’t tell to him to cast Neutralize Poison on Roy and V? If he’s been Charmed, that does not put him under exclusive control of the caster. AFAICT, he can still do other things besides what the caster suggests.
Once again, I don’t know how D&D magic works, but does being put to sleep automatically dispel any spells a person has cast?
Alternately, could Serini’s dart have contained a dual poison? A combination of a sleeping potion and an anti-magic potion? Is an anti-magic potion even a thing?
There are perfectly clear rules about what happens when a stat goes to 0 (in 3.5) from paralysis, to coma, to death. Roy could talk at 0 str and 0 con kills you so it must be another stat.
In 3E, spells run their duration even if the caster is gone unless it requires concentration. Fly is a set duration spell, so it wouldn’t be gone. Obviously, Rich doesn’t always follow that, but that’s the Rules As Written.
Specifically, 0 Str or Dex paralyzes you (but leaves you conscious), 0 Con kills you, and 0 Int, Wis, or Cha leaves you comatose. And damage to ability scores is a common effect of poisons in general, in 3rd edition.
I believe elves are immune to magical sleep effects (and don’t need to physically slumber). A poison that drops you unconscious would not qualify for immunity, nor would a movie-rag of chloroform or similar.
