I just want to note that although the above strip *says *that Zeus died, unlike all the other Greek gods, we don’t see him dead. I’m just saying.
Obviously Word of Recall works inside the Cloister; Redcloak just used it. (And didn’t Tsukiko use Teleport from one point inside the Cloister to another?)
Can Word of Recall be used to get back into the Cloister? I suspect not, because surely there’s an Azurite paladin or cleric or two who would’ve prepared safe havens inside the city. Is Word of Recall a summoning or a teleport or what?
Word of Recall belongs to the Conjuration school, specifically the Teleportation sub-school. Link.
Ooh, good catch. According to the exposition fairy, you can use teleportation magic inside the field, or from inside to outside, but not from outside to inside. So if Redcloak did leave the city, it’ll take a while for him to get back.
The description for Word of Recall says they teleport to a place they are very familiar with. Is there any sort of metric for what constitutes very familiar? Or is it just a period of time? Could Redcloak have recalled himself to his bedroom in Azure City or is it more likely that he’s out in goblin country somewhere?
Speaking of Eugene Greenhilt, why is he hanging around outside the Lawful Good mountain of the Celestial Realm? Does anybody really think he’s going to be judged as LG once the blood oath is fulfilled?
I mean, not to be taking his inventory or anything, but still.
A couple of questions:
a. Who built the tower, Red Cloak or Xykon? If it was Red Cloak, what happens if his amulet gets destroyed?
b. This one gets spoilered because it refers to Start of Darkness.
When Xykon got vaporized by Roy throwing him into the gate, what happened to the jewel in which he was storing the souls of Dorukon and Lyrian? (possibly misspelled those)
Oh I think it’s safe to say that he’ll be lucky to stick it out with lawful or good.
New comic is up! And I like it!
Hey! Didn’t someone predict V’s action a few pages back?
“… You cheeky son of a bitch.”
So, what spell do you think V cast on the phylactery?
The same one s/he likes to use on Belkar by writing I Prepared Explosive Runes Today.
Explosive Runes. BOOM !
HaHaHahaaaaa! LOL (seriously, I almost never LOL).
EXPLOSIVE RUNES!!!
I’m sure the gag would not be quite as sharp being collected in a book, but for a webcomic, that is priceless. Are we able to heap any more praise on Burlew for the fine job he’s doing?
Oh, fricking brilliant. The Littlest Briston just scolded me to shhhhh!, since she couldn’t hear her cartoons over my laughter.
Have you been reading the OOTs forums ? Someone there predicted V using Runes ( not quite like this though ).
Nah, this place is the only forum I visit. It was someone here.
Incidentally, from a dramatic POV, this is perfect. V wins through the use of magic, but it’s not through the use of earth-shattering thaumturgy like he tried before, but rather the prudent application of a humble 2nd level spell.
3rd. But I agree - that’s old, smart V coming back.
Those demons are as good as a Greek chorus (or a forum). “What happens if the amulet falls in?” “Why is the bird just hovering there?”
What’s the record for most consecutive cliffhangers in a web comic?
I’m still not sure what explosive runes will accomplish – they’re not that powerful a spell, are they?
The chances of Xykon being permanently destroyed are very low, IMO. However, I can see the possibilities in an idea suggested elsewhere: that Xykon and/or the phylactery fall in, seemingly lost, only to pop out at one of the other gates when the OotS least expect it.
And given that Blackwing’s reaction suggest something other than “mindless force of nature” on the other side of the gate, and the possible Chekov’s Gun in the fiends not knowing what’ll happen if the phylactery falls into the gate…
6d6 force damage, no save*. That’s quite a lot, better than many higher level spells in fact. Remember, Xykon’s already taken something of a beating, and hasn’t caught a heal yet, so it may well finish the job. At the very least, the explosion’s gonna delay him.
- although the bird may catch some of that, too. It gets a Reflex save for half though, IIRC
ETA : my guess : Xykon dies, the phylactery falls in the hole, and the Snarl uses it to revive a meaner, even more powerful Xykon as his vessel/agent in the mortal Realm. Essentially, Xykon goes right back to the original plan, except now he wants to free the Snarl rather than exploit it… and Redcloak doesn’t know.
