You might even call it his tragic flaw…
The dragon was criticized by many for going over the top with her planned revenge, so I suspect V will do likewise. Even if the family ends up completely safe and protected, I think the idea about the dragon’s fate will be that “death is too good for you” and V will do something utterly evil and vicious just because s/he can - got the magic, might as well use it, right?
I forget, can Wishes restore people to life? Yeah, I know, twisting words and all that, but you’d think with quadruple the power, V could find a way to rules-lawyer the dragon’s child’s full and intact resurrection or something. Returning a non-traumatized young dragon to his mom would be a big start in getting her to forget about any revenge attempts.
Yes, it can, but remember we’re talking about a BLACK dragon here. They aren’t as full-bore destructive as Red dragons or as cunningly manipulative as Blue, but they are just about the biggest jerks on the dragon block.
I’ll give you that. However, my bet is on the side that V isn’t going to even consider something to help “make nice”. V’s going to go waaaaaaaaaay deep into death-and-destruction, to a level that makes the dragon’s revenge plan look really tame, and just because the triple Evil crew handed out a bunch of new toys to play with.
Hell no. V doesn’t ‘make nice’ with creatures V considers inferior (i.e., all of them). The only non-elf V respects is Roy, and that’s only because Roy has an intelligence to match V’s, if not the magical power.
As an aside, I’m mildly amused to note who else is a RPGer / reader of OoTS. I would never have expected [del]the Spanish Inquisition[/del] Der Trihs, for instance.
Man, you guys need to read more revenge literature. The dragon is committing suicide. She knows that her actions are forcing V to desperate lengths. And she also knows that V strongly covets magic, and is extraordinarily arrogant. She’s using his own hubris to destroy him. V will make the deal, but maybe not in time to save the children, or perhaps his own magic will immolate them. The dragon will die, but will probably live long enough to gloat about taking everything from V. V will despair and give in to Evil at that point, and the dragon’s revenge will truly be complete.
Or, in short, a classic tragedy. What kaylasdad said.
#634 is up.
That pretty much seals the deal, doesn’t it?
And the title is “The Wrong Reasons” just so no one mistakes what is happening. I figured that some expectations would be subverted on this one but I guess not; it’s time for things to head downhill.
I think there is a little subversion going on here. Most people (myself included) probably assumed that the right being would be someone else, but it really looks like the infernal guys are gone at that point. Vaarsuvius is talking to himself.
I must say, those fiends had a pretty clever alternative strategy.
So, the obvious result of the deal is that the fiends will be able take over at a critical moment, probably near a gate, causing massive problems. Obviously a much better deal than a few minutes of torture after death. The question then is does V fail to realize this, or is she purposely ignoring it so that she can justify going forward with the deal?
I suspect this is one of those strips down the road where we’ll think back “you could have avoided this massive tragedy if only you’d used a little foresight.”
Let the record reflect that I called it:
Acytually, I suspect V will find a way to come out much the better on the deal. He is nobiody’s fool, and very unlikely not to have planned for the full repercussions…
No, at this point V is a textbook tragic hero. When all is said and done, she’s toast, and we’ll all be able to point back at this moment and identify it as where things went wrong.
Every now and then I’m reminded why I put up with the irregular schedule, walls of text, and occasional plotlines that drag to long. This really is one of the best webcomics out there. I hope V will be ok, he’s one of my favorite characters. At the least I am hopeful she will figure out a loophole or something to whatever the demons are planning.
I really like the “whoa” touch by the imp
Well, considering how many readers started salivating over any word balloon V threw out with four words in it, I don’t think that was a hard target to hit. Shoot enough arrows, and one’s bound to hit the target eventually.
I’m just glad the speculation will finally stop! Or at least decrease.
V is actually fairly foolish. In matters of intellect, solving abstract problems, V is unmatched. In matters of wisdom, solving real-world problems, V’s not so good.
Yeah, they all think using Wis and Cha as dump stats is harmless…
I am not certain that these are *the *four words. In the first place, Vonly said three words, with a stutter. More importantly, he didn’t say them *to *any being.
